I'm now ready to design and install my charging system. I would like some suggestions on how to set the system up. The car will be a drag car only with a MSD 6al ignition system, two radiator fans 25 amp draw, electric h20 pump6 amp draw, electric fuel pump 12 amp draw, electric fan on trans cooler 6 amp draw, trans brake , electric throttle stop and shifter. I'd like to run a single trunk mounted battery. I have an east coast altenator which puts out about 35 to 40 amps,.I intended on running a yellow top optima (900 cca/155 minute reserve) w/ the altenator. I don't understand the 16 volt battery option. Would this be an advantage?? The 460 BBC will be 12.5:1 with a high torque starter. I will run #1 cable to the starter. I'm installing a painless 8 circuit wiring harness with relays for the fuel pump and rad. fans. I'd like to run all day without having to charge between rounds.Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I don't know about the Optima yellow top but the red top let me down so often I went with another battery. I don't know that a 35-40 amp alternator is going to be enough, could be though. I'd hate to see you withdraw in the final because the car won't start.

That's probably the smallest alternator made. It's not going to charge a trunk mounted battery very well due to loses in the extra cable length. Maybe you meant 130 amps because if I had up all the items you added to the car, that's a large draw off the alternator.
A 16 volt battery is said to start the car better because of the higher voltage/lower current draw. The starter, fans, pump, and other items need to be rated for a higher voltage to prevent early life failure. You will also need a special charger or a special alternator to charge the battery. The charging system will need to put out around 17.5 volts to charge a 16 volt battery, further stressing the items in the car.
I don't race but I seem to recall that an alternator isn't used with a 16 volt battery system.
