hey guys i need some advice on cam selection.

i have used the comp cams xe268 in the past and really liked it. now i am looking to do a motor project and looking for cams that are close or better than it. it will be on a stock bottom end with factory heads 194/150 valve size and press in studs. i plan on heads at a later date but till then i use those. it has a victor jr intake on it with a holley 3310 carb and factory manifolds for exaust. (i know a very motley combo but it works pretty well) so i am going to upgrade the cam since we got it to the track on sunday and was pleased but not real happy. it has a stock converter for the th350 tranny. the xe268 works with that converter. i know the combo isn't great but i have to shift at 4500 cause at 5000 it falls on its face. the xe268 cam pulls solid to about 5800 in my other engine. i was looking for other cams cause i figured someone else might have a cam that will deliever the nice hot sounding idle with the good tq and hp of the xe268

here is the rundown on the truck.

1975 chevy luv
chevy 350
stock cam
stock exaust manifolds
victor jr intake
holley 3310 carb
3.55 rear gears with posi in a 8.5 10 bolt rear
th350 tranny.

Times from the 1/8 mile track

9.31 @ 75.68 mph
2.145 60' with no spin
.625 reaction time

i need more rpm and more power. so help with the cams please.

remember i am looking for something that will work as good or better than the xe268 comp cams

The cam is fine . . . I'd spend the money on a Performer RPM intake instead of the Vic Jr. The car will be faster --- trust me. ;)

If you still have any money left try a set of shorty headers --- maybe S10 headers would fit.

what cam is fine? the xe268?

i will get a new intake as soon as money allows. the truck runs great with the victor jr. i need more rpms before the intake. the motor with the factory cam just isn't cutting it.

Install a cheap $25 or $30 set of stock, -142 or Z-28 valve springs and I bet she will rpm higher b/c that cam should go to 6,000rpm at least..

May not make any more power that high, but it should at least go up there...

What year of engine is it? If it is a smog 350, with 8.0-8.5 compression, something along the lines of a comp 265 dual energy or a crane 272 powermax would work pretty nicely with stock exhaust manifolds and your gears. That intake isn't doing you any favors with all the other restrictions either.

remember i am looking for something that will work as good or better than the xe268 comp cams CB, take a look at Comp's solid line, the XS line. The XS 268 **might be** a freckle too big for such a low compression app, but the XS262S looks pretty spot on. Plus, they offer a dual pattern, which you need for upper rpm breathing.

Should be a decided gain over the XE268 just in terms of mechanicals.

Yes, the XE268 is fine. But the Vic Jr has to go . . . a Performer RPM will RPM much higher than the XE268 is capable of -- you'd do nothing but gain power everywhere . . .

If its a money thing sell the Vic Jr on eBay and buy an RPM on eBay . . .

it is a mid 70's 350. i was wanting to stay away from solid cams for the time being. i plan on updating other parts as well but till then the cam is first change. i thank you guys for all of your advise. i will stick to the comp cam xe268 and then try to get a new intake on there as soon as possible.
