Am I crazy to think that I should be able to buy a running 73-93 454 for between $5-800? I have been looking around and it seems people are stuck in the past. I recently acquired a W code 72 SS Elcamino minus the engine and trans. I would really like to find a engine I could drop in but I don't want to spend $1000+ on an engine that if I rebuilt the only thing I would use would be the block, crank and rods. Maybe I'm out of touch but with gas at $3.15+ per gallon for regular they can't be in that high of demand. I guess I just need to be patient although I did score a working THM400 for $50 today.

I'd do a search on craigslist. 454s are popping up all over the place. I almost bought two of them last month for 700 bucks. one running the other not. but cheaped out and just bought the non runner. jim

A good core for rebuilding goes for $750. You are looking for a bargain IHO. I've seen bare rebuildable blocks go for $500. You are going to have to stumble on somebody that needs to unload one quick because they need money. They are out there. I couldn't find one. I did find a 73 with 781 heads good running condition for a grand. I had to pounce on it. Good luck.

I've seen a few listed as "complete runner" in the $800-$1000 range.
Builder-project engines go for $400 w/o accessories and up....
Partial engines can be had for reasonable amounts if you are patient and willing to go to the sticks......
I have yet to see a drop in runner 454 for under $1k around my area.

I sell runners anywhere from $1000-1200 here in CT
They are complete w/all accessories and you can hear them run. That is the only I will do business :)
If they are unknown and I can't hear them run I wouldn't pay more than $300-400 for one with a 2 bolt main and 781 or 049 heads
