: Toshiba pulls the plug on hd dvd
kboorman Feb 19th, 08, 10:35 AM Crap. I just got my hd dvd player and about 15 titles and Toshiba has conceded to Blu ray in the next gen hd format war. Oh well, it's still a really good upconverting player and I do have some titles that are exclusive to hd dvd at this point, so it's not a total loss. My only gripe about the player is that it's ungodly slow to load.
Here's the official announcement from Toshiba:

Chris Stanwyck Feb 19th, 08, 10:39 AM You are not the only one. Just got mine before Christmas dude. Bummer.
bochnak Feb 19th, 08, 11:02 AM I held out for this reason. I guess time to save up for a PS3!
Olle Feb 19th, 08, 11:39 AM Our DVD-player has about had it so I'm looking for a new one right now. I have decided to go with a plain and cheap model, as I don't have time to keep up with a market that tends to change every day. It seems like you always lose when you're buying the latest and greatest.
twotone64 Feb 19th, 08, 11:53 AM I'm still ticked off about all the Beta Tapes I bought...

Funny that someone would remember those. My buddy's Betamax was actually what taught me to never buy the latest model of any electronic device... :D

toshiba vs sony...
this was as clear as beta
kboorman Feb 19th, 08, 12:41 PM It seems like you always lose when you're buying the latest and greatest.
I did weigh the possibility of this occurrance before buying the hd player and I decided that even if the hd dvd format eventually folded, I'd still have an excellent upconverter for sd discs. When Toshiba slashed the prices of their players, it was too much for me to resist. In the end, I paid about what I would've for a good sd dvd player (which I needed anyway) and I have the added benefit of hd too. I just wish hd would've held on longer.
Now all I have to do is get as many hd titles as I can to make the most of my investment. BD has no reason to lower their prices at this point, so the more hd discs I can get my hands on, the fewer I'll have to buy if / when I make the jump and the more money I'll save.
Unfortunately, the next chapter in this story will be Blu Ray vs downloadable movies. At this point, consumers seem to prefer buying discs to downloading (disc purchases outnumber downloads by something like 10:1 I think...) but that could change too.
twotone64 Feb 19th, 08, 12:42 PM Looking back, the critics have said that Betamax was a much better format none the less, the way of beta = sony, the way of HD-DVD = sony
Elcoman Feb 19th, 08, 2:11 PM The rumor I heard about Beta vs. VHS, was porn was available on VHS only.
So VHS won.:D
I think Disney is going HD only.
I heard something about smaller companies in order to compete they would have to send their stuff over seas to do blue-ray.
The overseas companies would just pirate the movie for themselves.:(
d1_bradley Feb 19th, 08, 2:24 PM Blu-ray = Sony. Kind of makes up for the Beta.
kboorman Feb 19th, 08, 2:41 PM The rumor I heard about Beta vs. VHS, was porn was available on VHS only...
I think Disney is going HD only.
Actually, what killed Beta was the recording time on the tapes. Originally it was limited to one hour whereas VHS was designed specifically to allow full length movies to be recorded on one tape. That, combined with the popularity of video rentals were big plusses for VHS.
The porn industry had apparently picked HD over BD as well. That was one of the factors that I had hoped would extend the life of the hd format but alas...
Disney and Pixar announced a little while ago that they were going exclusively BD. That and the recent announcement by Warner Bros to back BD were two huge factors in HD's demise.
Chevelle_Nut Feb 19th, 08, 4:56 PM We had a Video Disc player when I was growing up. Talk about a losing technology!

OrrieG Feb 20th, 08, 12:35 AM I'm still mourning the loss of 8 tracks to cassettes.....
JWA Feb 20th, 08, 12:41 AM I was looking at laptops a few days ago and I think it was Gateway actually had a hybrid that would play both types of DVD format. Of course now with this announcement, I bet further development or availability of those type of drives will move to some other aspect.
