Hi All (and especially Harold),

I need a new cam for my 10.1:1 383 -- see my post in Engines for the reasons why.

It's got Vortec heads, which I'll be upgrading to allow more lift. (LT4 Springs and Retainers, with umbrella seals, up to .525"?) I used 5.7" Rods.

I'm planning to use a 3.42:1 Posi Rear, TH350, and Edelbrock 600. This is a STREET vehicle, so I'm looking for Tons 'O Torque. And I love the idea of a SOLID FLAT TAPPET.

Recommendations?

I gotta "pitch" the 276/284 grind. It's wicked though and is more "go fast" than "easy drving". Question is, where do you want to be? Mellow idle/ no slow speed roughness? Pure mid range top end power w/ choppy idle and some low speed roughness?

Your answer will help Harold fit the right cam.

Looking for Bottom End and Mid Range. (Motor will be going in a 1951 Chevy half-ton pickup.) I think most of the other vitals are in my original post.

Got lift, .050" Dur, and LSA on that 276/284? I assume it's a solid?

As I posted in another thread, I'd recommend either the Lunati 401A3LUN, 272/282@.020, 238/248@.050, .485"/.503" valve lift, and 112 LSA, or else the 401A6LUN, 276/284@.020, 243/251 @.050, .518"/.530" valve lift, and 110 LSA. The 401A3 will go 1 year between valve lash settings, both cams have gone over 100,000 on the street. The 401A6 is the smallest in our series of racing solid lifter cams, but I have used it also for 20 years as a daily driver. It will have the rougher idle, the 401A3 will have the most vacuum.

274/280 with 236/242 at .050 lift 501/511.

IMHO the A6 will kick the Xs274 arse without beating up the valvetrain like XE grinds do. It cranks!
