My Dad says my starter with aluminum nose cone will not fit onto an aluminum bellhousing with my Munice 4 spd and that it needs to be steel. My frineds husband says it will if it has staggered bolt holes whcih it does. ANybody help me out on this? My motor is at the shop.

Chris,
Read carefully, take notes, pay close attention, there will be a test first thing Fri morning!
THE FOLLOWING PERTAINS ONLY TO FLYWHEELS/BELL HOUSINGS FOR A MANUAL TRANNY, AND FACTORY GM-DELCO TYPE STARTERS, NOT AFTERMARKET STARTERS ------------------------NOT AN AUTO TRANNY.
There are TWO sizes of flywheels and bell housings: big and small.
The small version requires a starter with a straight across bolt pattern.
The large version requires a starter with A STAGGERED BOLT PATTERN AND A CAST IRON NOSE-----------------REPEAT, CAST IRON NOSE!
This will be the only question on the test and if you miss it, you fail!
Here is a comparrison of big-amall flywheels.

Here is a comparrison of the big-small housings. NOTICE THAT THE BIG HOUSING HAS THE BULGE FOR THE STARTER NOSE STICKING OUT ABOUT 1in FROM THE SIDE OF THE HOUSING!!!!!!!
If the above flywheel/housing that you have is the large version, then you need to have the starter nose with a staggered bolt pattern and CAST IRON NOSE. A starter with an alum nose and staggered bolt pattern WILL NOT fit into the bulge of the big bell housing----------------IT HAS TO BE CAST IRON!!!!!

Here is a comparrison of starter noses with cast iron (left) and alum (right) noses.

In the below photo, the Iron nose is on the RIGHT. As you can see, the iron nose is just a bit smaller than the alum nose and will fit into the starter bulge of the big housing.
Again, all of the above applies to FACTORY TYPE GM-DELCO STARTERS. All bets are off with the aftermarket, mini type starters.

One last tiny detail. There is a ONE bolt that is unique for the cast iron starter nose and it is still available from Chev parts dept, the part number is 3733289. I call this bolt the "medium" length bolt. The alum staggered nose requires two long bolts and the straight across nose requires one long and one short bolt.
YOU MUST USE THE SPECIAL, SHOULDERED BOLTS FOR STARTER MOUNTING TO ASSURE PROPER ENGAGEMENT OF THE STARTER GEAR WITH THE FLYWHEEL GEAR.
Hope this helps.

unless, of course, you upgrade to the late model permanent magnet starters that GM started using in the mid 90's. they have a smaller nose that fits where a cast iron nose is supposed to go.

That is a true statement, and I should have also included that along with my comment about aftermarket mini starters.
I was emphasizing too much on the factory style starters of the day as a result of Chris' question.
