: BBC Timing Cover Seal, how tight should it be?

I'm talking about the seal that goes in the "crank/balancer hole" in the Timing Chain cover. I'm trying to install the seal into my brother's Cloyes 2pc. cover and I'm having a heck of a time trying to press/drive/pound that sucker in. I've tried coating the seal with PB blaster, putting the seal in the freezer and a combination of both, still can't get it to go in straight. It is a very tight fit and I'm starting to wonder if the hole isn't machined quite right. I've never had this much trouble with a seal.

Is there a special technique to this? I'm just using a large socket and a rubber mallet to try to drive it in.

I'm about to pull the stock cover of off my 454 core and just use that because this little issue is really slowing my progress down now.

Enrique,
Get rid of the rubber hammer. All it does is bounce off your socket. You need to support the inside of the cover with something, then use a real hammer to drive the seal in. I would not use any lube, that will make it easier for it to fall back out.

I installed one of these awhile back and it was a real PITA to get the seal in. I eventually got it using a tool that amounts to a version of what you're using. If you get any kind of a kink or anything in the side of the seal the seal lip may not be round, get a leak.

Block of wood and a hammer. Make sure it's straight.

We ended up sticking the cover in an oven for while, and the seal in the freezer. Then tapped it in with the socket/mallet. There was probably some PB blaster residue on it, but I hope it wasn't enough to help it pop its way back off. After cooling down it should be pretty much stuck. I'll inspect it for kinks, but it went in pretty smooth. This is the second seal though, my brother put a kink in the first one during our first frustrating attempt at this.

Hopefully it passes my inspection and I can get everything test fitted tomorrow and hopefully have the car driving by next weekend. Should be fun with 100ci more, 200 extra horsies, at least that much extra torque and a torque converter with about 2000rpm higher stall. Let's see what breaks first.

Will do and will definitely share any tuning tips I might find for everyone with similar combos.
