I need to install a Neutral safety switch in my car so I can pass tech at the local races this year. The trans is a turbo 400 and I have a B&M Mega shifter, is the switch on the shifter or on the tranny, if it can be on both which is the easiest to set up. I need to figure this out asap because our races are next weekend.
I also need to know how to hook it up.
Thanks

I have a B/M shifter as well, although not a Mega shifter. I think that all of the B/M stuff is equipped with two switches on the shift mechanism. One for netural / park start only and a seperate switch for back up lights. Pull the cover of the shifter and take a look for the switches, run it through the shift pattern, it should become clear of the one that closes in park and netural. On my 69 the factory switch for a column shift is located on the steering column. Just had to unplug the factory connection to the switch and run a jumper wire thru the B/M shifter switch back to the other side of the two conductor factory harness plug. Your doing right to pass tech, they check for that EVERY time that I have been.

In my 68 the original is in the column. And in my megashifter it's just as Craig stated. I use a relay to the shifter, that way it's kind of a double safety switch. If the column is in park/neutral AND the shifter is in park/neutral then the car will start.

Does it change anything if it was a 4 speed car and does not have a column shift.

Just slice the switch in the wire from the starter button/switch/key to the "S" terminal on the solenoid. All you are doing is opening the circuit when the shifter is in any position other than neutral or park. You'll need to run some wire. If there is no switch in the shifter, they are available from B&M. I got mine through Kragen.
