: mickey thompsom ---et street tire presure
sheetmetal Oct 20th, 04, 12:09 AM ive been running 17-17.5 psi in my 12.50x28 et streets at the track. out of a night of racing it "might" hook once. driving it on the street at 16 psi the rear is really wiggly at 50 mph. to tell ya the truth im afaid to go 16psi at the speeds in running. im also on a 8.5 rim and dont know what effect this has on the stablity of the tire at low tire pressures. what are you guys running the tire pressure at on this same tire? the 67 weighs 3600 loaded. also, am i a canidate for a real slick? are they any worse about instability? my short times vary .13. i cant believe its ALL do to a poor track. thanks, Dave
neat Oct 20th, 04, 12:24 AM That's kind of a small width wheel for that tire. The magic PSI for me was 14 cold, 16 after the burnout. I was using a 10.50 ET street on a 9.50 wheel though. You might try tubes, but that hasn't cured the instability problems associated with ET streets from what I have read. The biggest difference for me was simply switching to a different set of ET streets. The first set I had was as you describe, very wiggly, and unsettling at speed. That set took almost 5 oz. (!) to balance one wheel/tire. The next set of ET streets I had were 10 times better, but they only took about 1.5 oz. to balance. I guess not all ET streets are created equal.
505Nova Oct 20th, 04, 8:29 AM I'm running 14.5lbs in mine but it's a little bit lighter car. It might be your skinny wheels - mine are 10" and they are quite stable at speed. Sometimes this kind of thing is due to the front tires too... What do you have there?
I have 28x11.5x15's on a 15x8 rim. I drove to the track with them at 25psi, no problems whatsoever. Dropped them down to 15 psi for the strip where they seemd to hook the best.
bigjimzlll Oct 20th, 04, 8:56 AM i run 13.5x28 on a 10 inch wheel...13lbs cold. thats going through the lights at 120 mph(4365lbs)
Harold Sutton Oct 20th, 04, 11:17 AM We recently changed wheels, tires and gears. We went from 10.5 x 29.5 x 15 M/T - E.T. Drag on 8" wheels to a 10.5W x 28 M/T - E.T. Drag on 10" rims and dropped back from 4.11 to 3.89 gears. The traction difference is unbelievable. Went from a best of 1.39 to a 1.315. We now have too much bite. I think the wider wheels along with new tires made the difference.
We set our ET Streets somewhere around 13psi or so. Wish I could remember the size of them. They're not as wide as yours.
Oh, and I'd never drive with them on the street, for what that's worth. I've driven through water with them, and they're worthless on pavement once they are wet.
MeanKen Oct 20th, 04, 12:05 PM My chevelle is 3655 LBS with me on board. 28X 12.5 on a 10" wheel. Hooks really well. 1.55 60 ft. extremely consistently. Picks the left front up about 8-10 inches. At 14 PSI.
505Nova Oct 20th, 04, 5:40 PM Hehehe - yeah Harold I'd say you've got the Green car hooked up LOL. I watched Brian run last Saturday at Tulsa it was definately hooking! You ought to post that picture Harold!
DragRacer Oct 21st, 04, 8:26 PM Dave,
I found that on a marginal track, (TNT night) there is a night and day difference between an ET Street and an ET Drag. Especially for consistency sake. On a track that hooks there is very little difference between the two.
A friend of mine did back to back testing on a POOR track surface with a set of 26 x 10.0 Hoosier QTP's and a 26x10 ET Drags. 1.98 - 60' for the Hoosiers spinning through 2nd gear. 1.46 - 60' with the ET Drags. The runs were about 20 minutes apart. Made two passes with each tire. Same results.
I had similar results with my ET Streets and ET Drags, but never did back to back testing. With 28x10.5 ET Drags my car typically is within .01 for 60' for a given night. .02 at the worst. It would range about .15 on the ET Streets. I hope that holds true with the new big motor, but I really doubt it. ;)
