What would the shim be used for? I've never had to use a shim between any flywheel/flexplate in any of my cars.

I've never heard of running a shim behind the flywheel.

NO SHIM!

The ONLY thing that would EVER be installed behind a flywheel would be one of the balance plates that is sometimes used on SB400s or 454s with a regular flywheel.

If someone has told you that you need to shim the flywheel-----------------GET AWAY FROM THEM QUICK!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a '69 YZ Pontiac RA III engine and it has/had a shim. It wasn't some home made piece. First time I ever saw one.

Jeff ,did the flexplate have a shim ?
Tom ,ever use an engine plate ? How did you move the flywheel away from it ?
Yeah ,I know there not typical for a stock type install but there are always exceptions.

Mike. My engine plate fit right behind my flywheel with no issues. Never seen a shim behind a flywheel or flexplate.

The amount of shim you need is dependent on how much material has been cut off of the flywheel when it was resurfaced. The shim is to make up for that material so that you linkage has enough adjustment(especially important with hydraulic setups). Run away from someone who tells you to use one? I don't understand that why? You do not need one with a flexplate.
