: '68 396 closed air cleaner

The '68 396 325HP automatic Chevelles and El Caminos had a closed air cleaner with a vacuum motor on the snorkel that opens and closes to allow hot air from the heat stove over the exhaust manifold into the carb.

Two questions. Which side is the snorkel on? Passenger or driver? Were the lids painted or chrome or could it have been either way?

Thanks!

Seems to me there was also a difference in the AC for 4spd cars and auto cars

1968 325HP manual trans cars didn't have the valve or a heat stove fitting in the snorkel because they had A.I.R. (smog pump) instead of TCAC (thermostatic controlled air cleaner). All 350HP and 375HP cars had the open element air cleaner and A.I.R.
