yanniz Oct 25th, 03, 9:41 PM Thanks man, once again GM is totally overpriced.....Geeze, you can get a Reher Morrison 555 for cheaper than the 720 race engine..
EddieC67ss Oct 25th, 03, 9:44 PM Stupid question: Do these motors have a warranty?
coop Oct 25th, 03, 10:06 PM Yes these have the same warranty as the other GM crate motors:
12 months or 12,000 miles parts and labor if installed by GM dealer.
12 months 12,000 miles parts only if sold over the counter.
mc71454 Oct 25th, 03, 10:31 PM Just for comparison, I just added up the parts and machine shop fees for my 540....$8300 Carb to pan, distributor, fuel pump, gaskets, wires, everything...
Keep in mind I have had the same distributor for 6 years, Heads for 3 years, fuel pump for 3 years, I use a $10 swap meet GM take-off Crate motor cast iron water pump, a box stock Holley 850 DP. a $175 swap meet Victor JR....So this cost didn't hit all at once, I also got the 4.490 bore block brand new untouched for $1400 delivered, but I used an $1800 delivered price in the cost estimate. I also used regular prices, not swap meet deals in my estimate. I actually paid about $7200 for all my motor parts by hunting around for deals.
This $8300 cost would be if you started from scratch...Canfield Heads, Merlin II Block, Callies Crank and SRP Pistons are the big ticket items.
Based on the typical formulas using mph and weight my mill has produced 700+ HP at the flywheel this year, not that I am counting or anything, but just for comparison.
10secBu Oct 25th, 03, 10:48 PM I knew they were gonna be expensive, but not that high  . I still can't figure out why GM used a tall deck block...plus raised exhaust ports and now you can forget getting any shelf header to fit in any type of stock vehicle chassis.
I just did a quick list of a pure race near bulletproof race shortblock...still doesn't cost as much as GM's 620HP street shortblock.
Dart Big M block $2200
Crower crank $1800
Oliver Billet rods $1300
JE pistons $650
rings $200
bearings $150
oil pump, pan, pickup $300
Jesel belt drive $700
roller cam $300
Crower/Isky lifters $500
Gaskets $150
The parts list on a true hardcore race shortblock comes to $8250. You can likely figure on approx $500-800 on machine work and balancing.
I bet GM will still have people lining up to buy this engine even though they are terribly overpriced, and underpowered tongue.gif .
mc71454 Oct 25th, 03, 11:05 PM Yup,
What Todd said..
MadMarv Oct 25th, 03, 11:48 PM I was sorta wondering what I could get myself a 540 shortblock for, I think my 320cc dart heads would work just fine on that sort of cubes..
Not like I need it for any *logical* reason, but, I kick myself every minute on this site for not making the 460 a 489 over the winter when I took the engine out had it torn down, fixed, and put back together.. and already had the rods!
8k is more than I would have guessed though.
I think I am gonna have to wait a few years and get a non-matching # velle so I can abuse it with impunity..
garage bay 1: stock LS5.. bay 2: evil twin.
time to set the clock back..

yanniz Oct 25th, 03, 11:56 PM Do they offer a warranty on the race motors, or just the 620 versions?
LS6 PWR Oct 26th, 03, 12:38 AM thats crazy!...wow...people who'll buy those is the typa person that just buys the best money can buy and doesn't know how to build an engine..i built my first engine this summer the LS-6 454 crate engine in my 72....what an adeveture..but i loved every second of it awesome walking into the garage seeing a bareblock with a blanket over it..whop the blanket off and watch it coemk to life..ahh i'm an idiot..and for 15,000 you coulda had alota more hp..who is it scoggins dicky offers a 900hp 540 for what....13,000
bryan thomas Oct 26th, 03, 12:55 AM BOOOOO graemlins/sad.gif  GMPP= too much for too little just like todd said " for people with too much money "who couldn't put a paper towel dispenser together :D
let alone build a motor
oh well at least most of us know that if you look hard enough and take your time you can build a 750hp bbc for about $9000 with nothing but the best parts!!

Pvt.Cowboy Oct 26th, 03, 1:06 AM Some people buy crates because they live in an urban setting and haven't got a garage and anywhere to build and store their own motor. I don't know if they'd need one of *those* crates, but if they have to get a 454HO or 502 and have it dropped in by a garage, then that's they do.
Gotta do what you can with what you have.
k20mike Oct 26th, 03, 1:44 AM If you can afford it, and you want it,who cares what it costs. There must be a market for it or they wouldn't make it. People spend 35,000 dollars on pick up trucks those same fools will buy this.

ericrickster Oct 26th, 03, 6:33 AM called scoggin dickey just last week on an "all american" 555 shortblock for $5200 assembled
being a short deck block,it's actually usable in a car.
added it up using $3000 afr cnc heads and the typical good parts including a $700+ dominator and the bill came out to $12,340.carb to pan including spark plug wires and all!!
$4000 of that cost are parts you can get from summit racing,a 10% discount will drop the cost to under $12 grand turn key.some assy. required.
mikehartwell Oct 26th, 03, 1:24 PM I'm one of those urbanites that would probably shell out the cash for the GM R&D value. I know, even some GM "crates" come flying apart, but when you are talking "crate", e.g. an engine based on proven set of components mfg'd to fit together, then I think the only *real* choices are GM, Ford, Mopar. Everything else, as most have replied on this post, is a custom or semi-custom build. If you're shooting for 6-800 hp out of a BB, then you probably know how to get there a lot cheaper and lot more reliably than the people these engines are designed for. GM's strategy is clear - to clean up the "crate" end of the market and leave the custom builds to the experts. Many conglomerate parts suppliers (Edelbrock, Bill Mitchell, etc) are not capturing even a remote amount of success with their crate offerings. Why? There are people that will pay more for the peace of mind that comes from GM's $1B/yr R&D investment. Same with Ford and Mopar.
There is a clear distinction between crate engines and complete engines. Crates are synonymous with the mainstream companies - same components, same build everytime due to a long-time tested mfg operation based on repeatable results. Completes are synonymous with the opportunistic parts conglomerates and will generally include parts that met the specs but were the cheapest to get in quantity. The inconsistency in engine components make the "completes" far less reliable than a true crate.
I've done a ton of research on the shady side of the industry. Not saying I wouldn't like to build my own engine, nor do I lack the experience to do so. Time would be the factor.
If the true crate offerings did not meet my requirements, then it's off to a reputable local custom builder for an engine that would meet my needs. GM sells more 4 times the ZZ502's than the entire "540 crate" market combined. Must be doing something right.
The expense will be worth it to some, a stretch for others, but in time will settle on a competitive price. They're after market share so it's likely they will quickly find their value point. Wait a couple of quarters and see.
Best,
Mike
Nickel333 Oct 26th, 03, 1:34 PM For 18,000 dollars and 572ci. im sure alot of guys could go alot more hard core than 720 hp on race gas. That would be a respectable pump gas figure but not race gas. I think GMPP is rediculously over priced. Just because its "gm parts" now all of the sudden they up the price 3X. I know GMPP Gary probably dosent like this but he cant argue with it as it is completely fact. Im sure there parts are excellent and im not knocking their quality, but geese
