: Scored? Or Screwed?

Made a mistake during my boredom and was looking at craigs list a couple days ago. Anyhow 70 ElCamino from Arizona owner drove it up to Colorado last year where it sat since. Has all its original body panels. There are silver dollar sized "bubbled" areas starting to rust behind each rear wheel. Has a dozen or so door dings and one 4 hour dent in the left fender. Original paint was all cracked and crazed so he scuffed it and primered it black without fixing any door dings or anything. No rust in bed, floor pans, or fenders. I originally had the car bought for $1500 minus engine, tranny, wheels and tires (had a 454 and 700R4) but with a non functional GM cowl hood included (this was the deal made the night before i left to pick it up). I figured it was worth that considering the condition of the body and general lack of rust. Anyhow i show up yesterday and he tells me he decided to sell his buddy the hood that morning. I was like you could have called me as the number you have for me is my cell phone. Anyhow i told him i wasnt really interested in the car now as the cowl hood was a big part of why i wanted the car. Told him i would give him $1000 cash or i was hitting the road as i would have to replace the hood not to mention it wasnt right to sell it off after the deal was made and i was on the road already to pick it up. He said he had to have $1200 minimum for it as he was going to court at 2 for his DUI. (PS, never tell someone during negotiations your desperate for the money...... it just doesnt work in your favor, as you are about to hear.....) I told him i couldnt help that as its not the deal i made. So he proceeds to tell me "what if i throw some stuff in?" I said depends on what you are talking about. He says I will give you a new dash pad, door panels, seat covers (although the covers are marked 71-72), weatherstripping, arm rests, carpet, headliner, and new trim panels that go behind the seat on each side. Everything was still in the goodmark and original parts group shipping boxes. Thinking to myself at this point i figured for all that i would still be willing to give him the $1500 we originally dealt for as i would still come up to his $1200 mark for the body without the hood but he didnt know that at this point. I was sitting there thinking about it looking around his garage and said what about those wheels over there? (draglites with moroso front runners and 1 new BFG drag radial) He said i am missing one wheel and tire for the rear. I said "oh ok" like its no big deal to me and paused....... then he opened his mouth and said "but i will throw them in as well if you will give me the $1200 for everything. I said DEAL! and we loaded it all up.

Heck i dont know. Was an impulse thing, good solid car for a good deal turned better deal that wasnt to far away from me (5 hours). Might keep it might sell it but will roll it into the shed till i make up my mind. No he aint in jail i called him a bit ago as he had to send me the title in the mail today.

so is it a 12 bolt, disc brake car? I think you did great. It was kind of like my 71 deal. I really only wanted the muncie and parts to change over my chevelle. But the guys wife wanted it gone. I go to look at it, as im standing there having a serious case of brain fade iding a muncie, he tells me he'd take 1300 for it. This thing has the SS hood, 4 speed m20 tranny, factory console, I peak under it, its a power disc brake car with a 12 bolt. I buy it, we load it on my friend trailer. get it home, thats when I realize its got a floor tilt and maplight rear view. I figure may as well check the ratio. 3.31 posi! jim

It does have disk brakes onthe front but only a 10 bolt in the rear. I havent really picked over the car yet other than the body but I am more than happy with the deal.

Hopefully you get the title, Might want to hold your plans to see if you get it. Why couldn't he give it to you right there?

It's not real smart negotiating to expose your time deadline either. I hope he wasn't going to court for switching vin plates.
