I don't know if you can find one for $1000.00 but the Honda Accord from 1994 to 1997 is a great little car and they run forever. I have 4 kids and 3 of them drive one of these Hondas.

I have a Buddy who was a Honda Tech til he came down with cancer. His recommendation is the 91-92 accords and acuras. unfortunately the once at $1k are gonna be pretty rough. He days they are better than the 94 ups for accessory issues. Double your money and a lot more option open up. Lots of Geo metro's are priced around $1000. I had a buddy who got a decent one but needed a head gasket for $200. Another buddy in my second job got a $500 corolla that allowed him to keep his new Mustang in the garage for winter. It has 200k on it and runs like a top. It might need a clutch soon though he said. Hope that helps.

I've got 3 Toyota Celica's (5th Gen, '90-93) ... they're extremely reliable, and cheap!! I see them running on Ebay all the time for $500.
I paid $500 for my red convertible, and will be selling my white convertible for $1100 this Spring. The Celica 2.2L is probably the slowest 4cyl I've driven, but danged reliable!
Plus the 2.2L is a clearance engine ... so, no risk of danger. The white convertible I bought because someone thought a spun timing belt trashed the car ... I put a new timing belt on it, and have been daily driving for the last 2yrs.
The convertible is kinda unique too ... came over on the boat without a roof, and modified at ASC in Cali. Only about 7000 total made. The other bonus to buying a 15yr old convert ... is most have been parade queens, and mega-pamper'd.
Anyhow ... I find the 5th Gen Celi's to be a cheap, dependable option. Check 'em out.
Thanks, Neal

Ditto on the Honda's but make sure the timing belt is up to date, needs changed every 80K or so. My last one went almost 200K with no problems except for fuel pump relay and PS pump until my kid ran it out of oil. When we gave it to her at 150K it did not use any oil and had zero leaks, we just needed something that was easier to get the grand kid in and out of in the car seat (ours was a two door hatch Accord).
