The guy that has one of my old novas has a zz502 in it,it has a different intake and carb, has slightly bigger cam,and heads are ported, has about a 3500 stall con.,4.10 gears,th400 trans,in a 71 nova with glass hood and bumpers,no back seat, aluminum radiator. It went 11.10 with about 4 lbs of fuel pressure, leaving the line at about 2000 rpms, and old plugs and tuneup.Fixing the fuel pressure, leaving the line at about 3k or better, and fresh tuneup should put it in the 10's no problem, all this on pump gas and through the exhaust on street tires.

He said stock, not modified. Local fella has a STOCK 502, mild stall, 3.7 or 4.10s now I can;t remember, 71 Chevelle STOCK with poly bushings and boxed lowers, it'll run 11.65-11.80 on slicks. Darn respectible with such a smooth low end motor. I think that's the high end for Stock mill/stock chassis, many will be in the low-mid twelves with traction issues.

I know of one that is basically stock 502/502 w/ a bigger cam. 3500 converter, transbrake and a bunch of suspension mods to a '69 Chevelle. Other things like the usual - glass hood, racing buckets, full cage: 10.90's

AS you can see, a schooch more compression and a bigger cam really wake the beast up nicely.

The 72 Chevelle that I own now, was my brothers.

Stone stock with Dynomax headers,
3.55 gears, on street radials,
Stock suspension, mild converter (don't know the stall),
through muffler shop 2.5" dual exhaust & flowmasters.
92 Octane pump gas.
No tune up, full weight (No lightweight parts)
it ran, 12.5 @ 108 mph ,
with serious traction issues, on its only trip to the strip so far.

Monty Bogan's 69 camaro, 3400 lbs, 4.56 gear, 9 inch slicks, 5000 stall converter, THM 350 trans, 502 with stock lift cam (more duration) single plane intake, 750 cfm Holley. No other engine mods. 10.50 @ 125 mph, 1999 IHRA stock championship.

Gary - what kind of RPM was he turning? My wife is turning 6300 @ 123 with 3.73's and 29" tires. He has to of done work on the lifters, valves, retainers etc which would make it a non stock setup.... or he's lucky!

I've seen a couple of Novas with stock ZZ502's at the track and depending on tunng, gears, hook etc, they run mid to low 12's.
Another friend put Sallee Chev's version....slightly diff cam and Edel oval heads in a well prepped drag 57 Chev and it ran 11.5 or so.

With a simple swap to a solid roller cam, victor JR and 950 Holley and it went 10.7! The 502 really responds to a cam change.

Who's going to leave a 502 stock.

Added air gap intake (rectal ports), holley 750 dp, harland sharpe roller rockers. Running 12.50's at Bandimere Speedway (5800+ elevation).

All in a 1970 chevelle, 3890 race weight with 200# driver and 3/4 tank of gas.

Bogan's engine had "fixed" hydraulic lifters installed when the cam was changed. 7200 or so through the traps.

Remember though the car was a prepped stock eliminator drag car....helps a bunch.
