Question: if a spring seat locator/cup is not present or used will these cause harmonics that would break inner valve springs?

No, you do not cause harmonics.
Harmonics are a ratio of the natrual frequencies of the parts with regards to the speed at which it is being run at in the valve train & the springs are the worst offenders.
It causes surge which can cause the springs to come clear off the heads & retainers at certain rpms
Next is probably the pushrods.
But not locating the spring correctly can cause them to wander around on the head which means you may not be pushing straight down on the spring at all times.
This is probably not a real good thing.
It is best ot have them located correctly at both the top & bottom.

Mike, thanks again for the great info. If the spring wonders around on the head (ie- not straight down) it could cause the inner spring to break. Yes?
