Do anyone know if the drag pan from b&b #91088(for a sbc) will fit in my 71 chevelle? I can't tell if the sump is to big to clear the crossmember and find nothing online reguarding application. Thanks!

Robb71,

If it's a Stefs pan, call them and ask.......I have one on my motor and each have a serial number. They can tell you everything about your personal pan. If you call though, I'm sure they will be able to let you know. Stefs told me that a 4 1/2" deep sump is the limit for a stock crossmember. Any deeper and you have to modify the frame.

Hope this helps!!

Based on my measurements the 4-1/2" depth is correct. The other area of concern is the rear sump length. Many are 10". Most 70-72 SBC cars can only stand a 9" sump length as measured from the back.

Jason,

What would be the reasoning for the 10" long sump? I wouldn't think it would be crank clearance, but then again I don't know. I'm going to have the front crossmember modified for depth when the car is in the shop, but if I need to narrow it also, I'll do that too. I'd like to have enough room to take the current motor up to 638" later on.

I have used the Milodon Pro Competition stepped sump with full kickout on my chevelle. It is under P/N697-31187. It has only a 8 1/2 rear depth and it is a pain without notching the crossmember. I put a BIG notch in mine so as to make it easier to R&R the engine. With the deep rear the engine has to almost go in the car straight down to clear the firewall and crossmember. I am going to a piece of 1 5/8 tubing that will be removeable for pan removal if need be this year.Get used to notching the crossmember, I also stepped up to a 5 stage dry-sump system and I needed to notch for the pump to clear also. Think about that when the 638 shows up!

Thank you all for your help! What I had done was bid on a B&B oil pan(19088)that I found on ebay. Jeg's add stated "fits most Chevy's". Called Jeg's first and they assured me it would work. Found Stef's(B&B) # after I had won the bid and they said it had to be a particular varance of that particular pan. UGH! The pan has a windage screen, scraper, baffling & 7qt capicity.. $75 including shipping. Will find out friday if my bargan was a waste of money!
