Hey everyone,

In a month or two, I'll be redoing my suspension. Right now its stock. Kind of looking for some suggestions....

Lets face it, my car will mainly be street driven. I'm not looking for anything crazy...just a few things that will improve the handling. Is there one of those "must do" modifications? \

Thanks for the help!

I would say the first area that needs to be adressed are brakes for sure. However what suspension you go with may effect what brakes you use. For street drving this is what I would recommend:

Front Suspension:
SC&C Stage II package (www.scandc.com)
Some hotchkis lowering springs
hotchkis revalved bilstein shocks
Drum hubs modified to accept C5 brakes

Rear Suspension:
Currietrac upper and lower control arms
Hotchkis lowering springs
revalved hotchkis bilsteins
Either LS1 F-body brakes or C5 brakes as well
add a sway bar(might work with sc&c on what size would be ideal)

This would be a relatively mild setup and depending how wild you wanna go you could go with some speedway stock car springs with height adjusters ATS spindles etc. Another upgrade that can be done for around $100 but makes a huge improvement is the Jeep Grand Cherokee steering box.

Another upgrade that... makes a huge improvement is the... steering box.

I tend to agree with Neal. Easy bolt-on stuff. Effective; nice handling and ride and braking, without getting too costly... Of course, you will need 17"+ wheels for the C5 stuff...

I had a similar setup on my '66. I had Monroe Sensa-Trak gas shocks instead of the Bilsteins....

The steering box made a HUGE improvement in how the car felt (I chose an AGR unit)...

The C5 brake swap is really not too much more expensive than an ordinary disc swap (unless you scrounge the wrecking yard for the best deals)...

But even a fresh rebuild with rubber bushings and A-body disc brakes will probably be a nice improvement over "stock". If you want to stay with 14 or 15 inch wheels, this might be the way to go...

I previous rebuilt my '66 with 1972 Chevelle discs, and all Poly bushings... nice for the front, but stay away from Poly bushings in the rear suspension...

Despite the negative "press" it has recieved the past few years, the B-Body Tall spindle conversion is another "okay" choice if you are only running 15" or 16" rims (and can't fit the C5 stuff)... There's been alot of discussion about the poor bumpsteer problems, but alot of people run these setups without noticing anything wrong. Far from ideal, but better than stock...

I guess I should have stated this in my original post....

I have 12" discs in the front, the rear is drum, but planning on upgrading to disc.
It has a big front sway bar already, not sure of the size offhand, I'll have to check. And the car is on airbags, with 18's in the front and 20's in the rear.

I'm thinking some really good shocks, which ones would you suggest??? I dont have a clue when it comes to shocks....

Would a rear sway bar help alot?? I was originally planning on boxing my upper and lower control arms, but if the tubular were far superior, I'd opt for those.

And a final question....whats this Jeep Grand Cherokee steering box swap you mention? It will feel/handle alot better than a rebuilt stock unit??

Some good shocks would definitely be a large improvement. Might be best to get with Air ride or somebody like that for reccomendations on shocks tha will work well with the air springs. Is your airbag a 2-way or a 4-way system? If it is 2-way converting to 4-way will improve ride and reduce body roll significantly. Something like the currietrac rear arms would be a significant improvement but stock rebuilt ones (be sure to stay away from poly) with new rubber bushings might work for what you want to do. The jeep grand cherokee box is just one from the first generations jeep grand cherokees. They have much quicker ratio than stock and have better valving for better steering feel as well. You will need some adapters (try lee manufacturing to purchase them) to make it work but other than that it bolts right in.
