Hi guys. There's a little situation I have here, need some advice. I've had my 4.11 richmond gear and my posi for about 5 months now. I bought them brand new. My best friends dad said he would help me put them in about 4-5 months ago, everytime I ask he seems to just blow me off, or tell me "Ya we'll get around to it sometime". He's the only one I know that knows how to do it, as I know of 4 or 5 cars that he's done them in recently, and they're damn nice.

So what do you guys think I should do? Just wait around for him to finally give in, or take it to some shop? I have no clue how to do it, and either does my dad. I bought the gear and posi and installation kit for 600 bucks brand new, and I really dont want to spend much more to get it installed. How much would a shop charge me to install it, estimated? It's the only thing I'm waiting on to take my car to the track, and I havnt been able to all summer.

If anyone in Indiana was willing to help me and had the tools I'd appreciate it. Hell I could buy ya dinner, and a case of beer or somethin. I just really am getting antsy after watching this thing sit on the shelf for 4 months.

Thanks,
Joe Phillips

(sorry for the book)

I feel for ya man. I'd help you out if I could, but I've only rebuilt an open 10-bolt...once. That and I'm not exactly in the neighborhood.

I say...show him the money. I think most shops get around $200 or so for setting one up. I'm sure prices vary accord to the area.

Show up with $100 cash and tell him you're serious about it. Or you could bring $75 and a case of his favorite beer that you guys could chug AFTER the job is done. If it's a friend situation...I wouldn't pay any more than that. Hell, I LOVE to work on stuff with my buddies and sure as heck wouldn't charge them arm and a leg for anything, as this is my hobby.

For your friends' dad....show him a little cash. Tell us how it turned out. We expect some track times when you get it lined out.

JP-15 where in Indiana are you located? I know of one person who my dad had him set up a rear end about 17 years ago and to this day it still works. If you live in Indinanapolis there's a guy by the name of Buck Burke and his shop is located on I think US 31 and Thompson Rd. I'm going to have him set up a ring and pinion in my Nova sometime in the future.I think he quoted me $200 for the labor and I bring the parts.

If after several attempts, he doesn't want to do it,he may be blowing you off for a reason. And if he does "give-in", he may do it just to get it done. It's not worth the problems it may produce, or losing a friend over.

Spend the money and find someone local thats good. Chances are that if your going to race the car, it's not going to be the last time you'll need him. You may want to change the rear several times.

Another alterative would be to ship it off to Mark Williams, Currie Enterprises, or some other rear-end specialist. It would be expensive, because you would have shipping (to and from)and installation charges. But you'd be confident that the job was done right.

Good Luck,

well it sounds like this kinda deal, looks like you need to get started on it......do the labor part....get under the car and take the rear end out.......start tearing it down.....you only need him to set it up.......do the labor part of it and just call him over to help you set it up.......more then likely he is not looking forward to do all the work to take the rear end out.......he has in is mind that he has to do all the work....and thats why he is not in a big hurry to get around to doing it........my buddys look to me to do the rear end set ups and head work and tranny work........i never look forward to doing the whole job......so now i tell them once you get the tranny , rear end, or whatever out and tore down the call me and ill be over to fix the rest........so im thinking maybe this guy might be in the same....... talk to him and ask him if i get the rear end out and tore down will you come over and set up the gears.......worth a shot......i dont think he will do a bad job because he knows you and he wouldnt want to look like he cant do nothing right ......you just need to get the ball rolling......

That's it exactly. Get out your lawn chair. That's what I tell them. Knowin' how is one thing but doing it is another. It's your car. You get all greasy and banged up. Then, when it's out, I'll show you how. After that, I'm drinking a beer while you put it all back together. Remember, he's doin' you a favor. If it's about money, I'd go to a shop. At least that way you'll have some sort of warranty to fall back on. Get the rearend out and torn apart. Then, if he's still "too busy" you can haul it to a shop. Either way, it's gotta come outta there before anything gets done so just do it. Did you ever show up to help someone move and when you got there, they weren't even packed yet? Same thing. I'm here to help move the couch not put silverware in a box. Call me when you're ready.

JP-15, where in Indiana are you located? i can fix you right up. my buddy does this all the time. he has set up several dozen 10 and 12 bolt chevys. he is located in Bloomington. if you take the rear out of the car and bring it to him, it would be the easiest. let me know, and i'll give his name and phone number. You guys are right. That's exactly what we planned to do, I was going to bring my car to his garage, he was going to watch me rip it apart, make sure that I did everything right, looked at the shims and such. Show me what stuff is. Then I was going to put it back together with him watching to show me how to do it. I did my trans over there like that. Me and one of my friends did it in like 4 hours together and he worked on his car and whenever we wernt sure of something we would just ask him. I think he got under the car one time to look at the linkage to the shifter.

Mike's the type of guy that definetly wouldnt half ass anything.

I live in North-West Indiana. Porter County. Bloomington is about a 3-4 hour drive for me. Is anyone any closer that might beable to help out? We can do just as I described, you watch me rip it apart and just show me how to put it together. I just would like to learn how to do it.

Thanks,
Joe Phillips
