I'm building a 454 for GP, not specifically for any particular application at this point. I've built one for the Chevelle allready and had this other core collecting dust. I've got the rotating assy assembled and are working on the heads now. Here's a little insight as to what I have so far: .030 over .095 dome forged slugs, stock rods, and stock cast crank. The orig application of this engine was in a '85 vintage P series Motorhome. The heads I have are unmolested, small oval, small valve from the same application. I don't have an abundance of cash to aquire better heads at this point and will run these. As this engine most likely will be utilized in truck/towing usage anyhow.
My question is, what range of max valve lift can I utilize with the stock spring/valve arrangenment? Has anyone ever played with these heads?? The machine shop is of no help, they just say use a stock cam :( I'd like a little more cam than that.
TIA

BTW, the trk heads cc out at 107, this should put the motor in the 9.3 to 9.6 CR range.

For stock springs in 454s used for towing, etc, I use the 272/272H12, 217/217 at .050, .515/.515 valve lift, and 112 LSA. My Duallies with this cam average 8.5 to 9.5 MPG while pulling a 28ft race car trailer, race car included.
I put the next size smaller in a 75 GM Motor Home, 455 Olds. He reported pulling a car in tow at 95 MPH, and averaging 9.9 MPG driving sanely.....
All these are in the .500" to .515: valve lift range......
