: Choose my Hood Scoop...poll
OutCast Feb 10th, 08, 2:53 AM Because you guys are my local 'peeps', I am going to run this poll by you good folks first. I always had it for the 5 and 7 inch snorkel's, but I'm past that. Here's my final showdown. You can help me decide. Because I'm coming to play at Bremerton, Monroe, and other WA points of interest before the wall eats me and my whole racing program, I thought I'd enlist all my NW brothers to help me make my half fast/ half glass ride be respectable.
I know Brett says go 2" cowl, which I do concur, and Dave says go big cowl, I am thinking long term, either T-ram or roots blower, and such determines my poll choices.
Thanks for playing, Glass my Scoop.
Your opinions are more valued than your Walgren's super saver redemption coupons.
Thanks for voting. I'm going with the top vote. Throw your hat in the ring.
66 Buick Special Feb 10th, 08, 3:49 AM John,
I was looking for one of these old school scoops the other day when you were discussing snorkel options. Well I finally found one.:D
When I was 16 and had my first Chevelle (a 1968) I drew this cartoon of a '68 with the scoop shown here as their model PR-1.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t227/66buickspecial/my68Chevellecartoon.jpg
I still think it would look bad a$$ if you decide to go with something that will fill it up.
http://www.up22.com/scoopw3.htm#PR-1
I also put an L-88 scoop on my '67 Mustang (guess I never did care what other people thought cuz I liked it):D
Of the two choices you've posted, I'd lean towards the L-88 to be different but I'd want to lay one on the car to look at first. Of the cowls I'd go 2".
Good Luck!
MalibuSeaS Feb 10th, 08, 7:46 AM For a mild street car I'd go with the Vette scoop, but for a radical drag car I'd go with a 4" cowl induction. ;)
Red Rocket Racing Feb 10th, 08, 10:07 AM I voted for the 2 1/2 cowl
FRYNTYR Feb 10th, 08, 12:21 PM I would have voted the cowl but everyone has a cowl hood on there 68-69 unless it has the cooler stock SS hood. Now the L-88 is old school and would have a personality all it's own. It does say BAD-A$$ all over it, so I had to go L-88 to be different
flink69SS Feb 10th, 08, 12:43 PM Forget the scoop and just have some bad azz air cleaner poking through...
OutCast Feb 10th, 08, 1:26 PM I also put an L-88 scoop on my '67 Mustang (guess I never did care what other people thought cuz I liked it):D

Excellent sketch, Greg ! Reminds me of the "Rat Fink" decals.
I had that very scoop on my first car. A 327 powered '67 Nova. It looked good to me!
Now the L-88 is old school and would have a personality all it's own. It does say BAD-A$$ all over it, so I had to go L-88 to be different
Well, with a 'glass front end and a 10 pt cage, I guess one could say this car is different, at least not conventional. :D
The two options for the L-88 are PR9 and PR19. I'm thinking the PR9 is the one to go with, and it runs at 3 3/4 " high.
http://www.up22.com/scoopw3.htm#PR-19
I know I said I'm going with the poll results, but hey, it's my election and I can rig it if I feel like it. :)
FourEightyNine Feb 10th, 08, 4:06 PM John find one of these to put on your fiberglass front end, I will put my vote for it. I believe Chris Stanywick?(sp) runs one on his 69 on this site.
http://www.usbody.com/images/CVH-67.gif
L88 because it'll still function like the cowl hood and nobody runs it anymore
66 Buick Special Feb 10th, 08, 5:19 PM That's a cool option too Brian, I like it also.

I wanted to put one of those Motion STINGER hoods on my nova at one time.
kettbo Feb 10th, 08, 6:08 PM 468Brian is saying 'stinger' hood..The Dick Harrel 68 Nova's with 427 had these.
I have at least 2.5" dome with RatVette's L-88 hood
I'm not gonna vote yet
FRYNTYR Feb 10th, 08, 6:18 PM That's right,,,,the Harrel nova,,,that's what I meant. I knew it was one of those, just didn't remember off the top of my head.
Thanks for the refresh.

hey dudes,
cold enough for ya today Brian. Winter su-ks.
Speedorama was a good break today at the CNE.
Ya that's my stingerhood, made by VFN...a bolt on......that was cut to fit a 16" filter...turned out to look better as well with the hole....as well as more cool air...front and back. Turned out the hood gave the needed clearance for a vic jr + 1.5 inches of spacers + dominator=sufficient cfm from a 16" filter to breath my 540 quite well. It was a sigh of relief, let me tell ya once I closed the hood for the first time. :)

FRYNTYR Feb 10th, 08, 9:13 PM Darn,,,,wish you lived closer.
That'd be awesome for ya to hook up with our group and do some asphault sealing with that thing.
Thanks for chim'n in with the info on your hood.
Kevin R Feb 10th, 08, 10:07 PM That hood does look tough.
66SSFan Feb 10th, 08, 10:15 PM WOW Chris, thats an awesome looking car:thumbsup:
kettbo Feb 10th, 08, 11:56 PM Darryl,
We posted at the same time re hoods.
Yes, I was thinking that 68 Nova with a Stinger hood, Dick Harrell tribute.
For ya guys not really into Novas that much, DH made a COPO for IIRC 50 68 Novas, SS 396 but with AUTOMATIC th400 behind the 396/375 and 4.11s. This was the first time a solid lifter BBC Chevy car got a slushbox. Several of the cars got DH installed 427/425 horse engines and the stinger hood. How would you like to go plunk down some coin at your dealer for one of those bad boys?
Chris Stanwyck Feb 11th, 08, 9:13 AM Thanx for the kudos dudes.
Dave Feb 12th, 08, 1:02 AM Gotta prep for the 540. I'm telling Ya'
RAMBO Feb 12th, 08, 2:18 AM
OutCast Feb 12th, 08, 12:20 PM The L88 is catching up...16-20 at this point.
Kevin R Feb 12th, 08, 7:22 PM I voted cowl but with all the peer pressure I want to change my vote to L88:thumbsup:
FRYNTYR Feb 12th, 08, 9:34 PM I voted cowl but with all the peer pressure I want to change my vote to L88:thumbsup:
I didn't know you could do that. Oh,l I guess you can't on the poll it self.
So, now it is 19 for L-88, 20 for cowl.................one more person change their mind and L-88 wins.
Kevin R Feb 12th, 08, 9:51 PM My 3 year old son just said he voted for the L88:D
OutCast Feb 13th, 08, 2:10 AM Close enough for me.
I've got meetings in Vancouver in March, so I ordered new glass bumpers from Token Fiberglass out in Mission. http://www.tokenfiberglass.com/. Front and rear for $150 each. I can pick them up with my truck and save me a bundle on freight.
I also asked Ken if he makes L88 scoops....he does, and is making one for me. So I'll pick it up at the same time. It's the full size one too, 49" long and 3 3/4" high. I just felt compelled to do something a little different, so here I am. He makes nice stuff, and it feels good to shop locally. Especially considering his prices are good and I can pick it up. Unlimited wanted $200 to ship their L88 scoop to me. :noway:
Thanks everybody for their votes and input.
Guess it's time to build the blower motor now...
FRYNTYR Feb 13th, 08, 3:07 AM My 3 year old son just said he voted for the L88:D
Shawn said he liked the "LOOKS" of the L-88 too! :D
Fat Tire Feb 13th, 08, 7:51 AM This is starting to turn out like our last election for Governor with all these
"last minute " votes being found and turned in. I know it's too late now but ran across 6 homeless folks that all liked the Cowl look. That's not counting the 3 votes from the people who past away a few years back..
Just kidding. I think she will look good with the L88..
66 Buick Special Feb 13th, 08, 8:41 AM Great choice John! It's awesome you are able to deal with a local manufacturer in regards to your new scoop.
RAMBO Feb 14th, 08, 3:53 PM hey dudes,
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r29/Jutskin/random017.jpg
More Pics More Pics... We Want more PIX!!! That hood RULES! (and the whats under it don't look too bad either!)
 :D
FourEightyNine Feb 14th, 08, 10:20 PM John watch this it ought to give you a good idea what your hood will look like http://youtube.com/watch?v=Nrad6NzgAx8&feature=related
66 Buick Special Feb 14th, 08, 11:49 PM cool! I think I'd cut about 4" off the rear and slide it back from the hood edge.. but that's just me.
OutCast Feb 15th, 08, 1:02 AM Thanks for the link, Brian. That is a fine looking '69. Yes, Greg, I think a little off will be a good plan. Kind of why I was in favor of the PR19 @ 41" as opposed to the PR9 @ 49". I did the measurements on my front end, and it would look a bit more proportional if the length overall was shortened a bit.
The only L88 mold he had is the full size one though, so that's what I'm getting. I'll trim it back as long as it doesn't make it look to stubby and boxy.
Thanks again guys for your input.
66 Buick Special Feb 15th, 08, 2:24 AM Here's a pic of my '67 GT with the L88 I shortened to fit.

66SSFan Feb 15th, 08, 3:03 AM Nice stang Greg, my first car was a '67 fastback with a soild cam 289 and C4 auto. I sure miss it!
FourEightyNine Feb 15th, 08, 3:19 AM My first car was a 66 stang 289. I just about got signed out of the family will, and came to my senses.:D
Wish my chevelle was in as nice of condition as that stang was. But it was about as much WOW factor as Darryls Pink scooter.
66 Buick Special Feb 15th, 08, 8:13 AM Thanks!
This was a GT 390/4sp/9" car, 11:1,Comp Cams 280H,factory 427 alum. intake. Paid $1600 with 82,000 miles on it.
OutCast Feb 15th, 08, 12:10 PM That looks great Greg. I believe the mustang hood would be longer than the chevelle. How much length did you cut off, and what tool did you use ?...grinder and a zip disc ?
66 Buick Special Feb 15th, 08, 4:49 PM John, I used a thin cutting disc on a die grinder. I don't remember exactly how much I cut off. I just laid the scoop on the hood and kept sliding it back until I thought it fit best. I'm guessing 4-6".
OutCast Feb 15th, 08, 4:54 PM
OutCast Apr 10th, 08, 1:04 PM I don't know why this thread keeps popping up ???
For those that are still voting....Thanks, but the show is over. L88 is installed and ready to suck some bugs up.
OutCast Apr 26th, 08, 3:04 AM Thanks for your interest. After seeing the car on the trailer tonight, I'm grateful I went with the L88 scoop. It looks sweet on this thing.

Where is she off to? Getting glass?
loader1 Apr 26th, 08, 7:50 AM That looks really good John,....are they adding special fuel? :D
Chris Stanwyck Apr 26th, 08, 10:46 AM Looks great!!
Nice view as well from the driver's seat.
OutCast Apr 26th, 08, 1:13 PM Thanks, guys.
At work today to get the alignment done and replace any worn front end components. I'd like it to be straight at 100+ mph.
Yes, Mike...special fuel.
Beer...the universally recognized currency of Thank You to friends.
FourEightyNine Apr 27th, 08, 5:02 PM haha the votes keep rolling in. But the L-88 scoop is on and looks totally bad@$$, I duno what it is about your chevelle that I like so much. Probbaly because its a race car with a I dont give a **** kinda look:D
66 Buick Special Aug 13th, 08, 3:40 PM It just wouldn't be the same car with a cowl hood.:noway:
Nothing against cowl hoods, but on a flat black tilt nose...
It needed something more.
RAMBO Sep 5th, 08, 7:04 PM just looking at that hood again... Way cool
Dave Oct 28th, 08, 1:18 AM So, will You cut the L-88 to accomodate the Tunnel Ram?
Kevin R Oct 28th, 08, 1:29 AM So, will You cut the L-88 to accomodate the Tunnel Ram?
He might as well cut the hood as Im sure there will be a blower on there in the near future:D
kettbo Oct 28th, 08, 2:00 AM He might as well cut the hood as Im sure there will be a blower on there in the near future:D
After seeing and hearing Roger's Camaro on SAT.....bet more than one blower next year!:D
OutCast Oct 29th, 08, 12:45 AM I'd love to stick a blower on this thing one day. However, that's just a little rich for my blood right now...unless that unbelievable craigslist deal comes along.
I don't want to hack up the L88 scoop just for some tunnel ram fun. I'll probably just mud up my old steel fenders and hang them back on, and get a 'glass pin on hood and cut out the area for the t-ram, then that way I'll have it in stock when I finally get one of those big black belted blower bastiches.
That'll be right around the time I'm feeling so cool and cocky I'll probably stick it in the rhubarb patch.
gotago Oct 29th, 08, 8:34 AM That'll be right around the time I'm feeling so cool and cocky I'll probably stick it in the rhubarb patch.
Or wipe out some more flowers;) Just procharge the damn thing and keep the hood the way it is.
