: 496 cam rec. Harold and others
dukejoh Feb 10th, 04, 7:34 AM Sorry for posting another cam question, but I am looking for a cam that is a solid flat tappet and can do everything... ;)
Engine specs
4.310 bore SRP's w/18cc dome
4.25 stroke dragonslayer
6.385 scat H beams
10.3 true static compression
Holley oval port aluminum heads(2.19/1.88)
RPM airgap intake
holley 850 vac sec off 502 crate motor
T56 6 speed trans with a 3.73-4.10 ratio 12 bolt(I haven't decided yet on what gear).
Hydroboost brake booster so NO Vacuum worries
They car will be 80% street driven but I do not want to leave a lot of power on the table for driving characteristics(rough idle). I would also like to be able to acually use 6th gear without having to do 100mph, so the perfect cam would not "cam" and lunge at about 2000 rpm doing about 80mph down the interstate. Am I asking too much?? I like the looks of the lun/ud 288/296f10 but don't know if it would be calm enough to utilize 6th in my 496. If my compression needs to be raised, a little decking of the heads would not be a problem. I was planning for 10.5 but left the pistons a couple of thous in the hole and the cnc chambers are 115cc instead of the original 110cc.
Please include part numbers if you have them because I am ordering soon...just need to get my assembly balanced and I am ready to start bolting.
graemlins/beers.gif for everyone who read this far
Thanks
Caleb
Man, you're going to have the gear multiplication of a John Deere. 496 + T56 + 4.11's.
427L88 Feb 10th, 04, 8:55 AM My 276/284F10 stops "lunging" at around 2300 rpms or so. Installed +7, lashed tight at .023, in a tiny 439 ci rat with BIG port heads. Full vaccum advance on, but the mechanical curve isn't all seen at 2300, guess = 33 degrees advance. For reference.
(I should think the bigger profile 288/96 at a 112 lobe separation would achieve the same.)
I have the 288/296F10 in my 496, Viper T56 .50 6th gear, 3.08 rear gears. I can cruise along in 6th around 1600rpms just fine until I start going up hill. Then I have to drop it into 5th where it's much happier. I'd go with the 4.11 rear gear. I have a new set of 3.73's waiting to go in but I'm running a shorter tire.
427L88 Feb 10th, 04, 10:19 AM Keith you ever ET that thing!? WOW! And an EFI to boot! Man, that's one MINT ride!
KAA Feb 10th, 04, 12:40 PM Thanks Gene! No ET yet. I'm setting it up mainly to do some road racing. I'll be in OKC in May and will most likely hit the drag strip then. Still need to do gears and get my new gas tank baffled. I did all the work last summer and haven't gotten everything dialed in yet. Tuning the EFI has been a tricky task and that big cam isn't making it any easier. I've been able to make some small improvements but I have a ways to go. Hopefully, the wideband 02 will make it much easier when I get it set up this spring.
dukejoh Feb 11th, 04, 1:27 AM Thanks for the replies...Keith, glad to here that the 288/296f10 works well with you. I am pretty sure that is the cam I want to use and I will probably go with the 4.11 gears. I can't wait till everything starts coming together.

Caleb I am glad you are using my crank and rods that I sold to you in a Chevelle. Because I too was building a 496, I also had a cam selected for the combo by UDHAROLD.
UD 288/296 F10
Good luck!!
dukejoh Feb 11th, 04, 6:50 PM Yea I have mocked up and got my deck height and clearances done for the shortblock. Now when I get a break from school, I hope to take my rotating assembly to have it balanced and try to assemble my engine the last week of March(spring break). Maybe get to drive before the end of summer if all goes well...
Cable the crank and rods were excellent and the callies crank was right on the money when checking bearing clearances.

How do you like that hydro-boost brake assist? I been thinkin of that one for my Chevelle. Easy/pain in the ass to install? Does it really double the brake power? Any other comments? Thanks for the reply, Nick
UDHarold Feb 12th, 04, 12:06 AM See, you guys don't need me at all....
BTW, that 496 at 10.3 CR with the 288/296F10 should be making about 630-640 BHP around 6400...
Idle should be around 850-900.

MarkM Feb 24th, 04, 9:36 AM Those that have done the 496. Did you have to clearance the block at all to fit the extra stroke? What about crank to cam clearance?
dukejoh Feb 24th, 04, 1:44 PM When the mockup was performed, my Dragonslayer crank and scat H-beam rods cleared but were just a little to close for comfort, so they got clearenced a little bit.

kboorman Feb 24th, 04, 5:25 PM Anyone, I see that Caleb is using a Hydroboost setup so the brake booster isn't a problem, but what kind of manifold vacuum could you expect from his cam? I am building a similar motor, and this was a concern of mine. Thanks, Kirk

Idle should be around 850-900.Sorry for the ignorant question...what are the specs on that cam, Harold? I went with a comp HR cam (XR294HR) in my 496, and was just curious to see how they compare, if they do at all.
