Hello, brand new to this web sight. Looks interesting
I have a 67 chevelle and and wanting to know if it is an L79? Does not have original motor or trany. Does have original 12 bolt posi, blinker tach and is a manual speed car, has the clutch peddle. Came with a 350 automatic. Did the factory install only one ratio for the L79's?
Thanks, Jeff

Were you lucky enough to get the protecto plate booklet with the chevelle? Owners protection manual with a metal plate attached to the last page?

If the original engine is gone and the car has no documents (buildsheet, Protect-O-Plate) there is no way to tell if it was built as an L79 car. Most any rear end ratio was available in any car as original equipment or optionally.
All L79s were supposed to come with 12-bolt rear ends, but in '67 & '68 the L30 327 also got a 12-bolt when ordered with a 4-speed. The L79 either came with a h.d. 3-speed floor shift Warner T16 (like a 3-speed version of the cast iron early T10) or a Muncie M20 or M21. The L30 came with a Saginaw 3-speed, Warner 3-speed floor shift, Powerglide, or Saginaw 4-speed. The Saginaw transmission has the speedo cable going into the left side of the tailhousing, whereas the Muncie has the speedo cable going in the right. The speedo cable would therefore be longer on the Muncie cars.
As for the ratios, the L79 came with a 3.31 ratio standard but you could also get 3.07, 3.55 or 3.73. If you got the close ratio M21 you had all those choices plus 4.10, 4.56 or even 4.88.

Wouldn't the right front brake line be a small block type as compared to the big block that travels down the frame a little farther?

As it would be on ANY car that had ANY 283 or 327 originally installed.
