Hi fellas,
Alternator on my 66 SS-396 was cored out at some point. Current one works fine but I wanted a properly date coded unit. I bought a properly dated core but instead of rebuilding would like to swap innards from old one to correctly dated housing so my qustions are: when swapping parts, What should I check for internally knowing that current alt works perfectly and is a physical match? Bearing play; shims; case shims etc? Also is there a trick to electrical hookup so as not to burn out regulator or other electric parts? If I can do this with your help I would like to do it myself (satisfaction) but if it is over my head I'll take to an electric shop for help. Thank you for your help.

I don't know about where you're at but I've got an alt./battery rebuilder in the city. You would be better off taking it to a rebuilder since they do that sort of thing everyday and have access to parts. Plus, you can talk to them in person and let them know exactly what you want to do. They will even clean it up and make it look like brand new.

Excellent advice! That is what I would do...
There are so many delco "pieces" that can be put together that will all fit but not all will work correctly. Some would seem to work but will cause problems on warm days, other on cold days etc. The worse ones are where on a battery disconnect the output voltage goes excessively high and other things in the car get blown up. Don't ask me how I know....
