I need to drill out my rear drums to 1/2" for my screw in wheel studs. Anybody have one I can come over and use ??

Thanks
Kevin

Did you put ford ends on your rear end? If so your gona have to enlarge the center hole also.

For some reason I am thinking at we couldnt use my buddys drill press in his garage to enlarge the holes, might have not fit properly on the press.

No F*%D ends. Also why would that affect the center hole on the brake drum when the drum sits against the axle??

The center part of the axle is bigger on mine and we had to enlarge the center hole on the drum so it would slide all the way onto the axle. Mine are also 1/2" studs. Make sure they will clear into your current wheels with the lug nuts, I dont have alot of clearance with my cragars....cant wait to put some light pizza cutter wheels up front, along with some DOT slicks on the back.

You didnt answer my question about why the Ford ends effect the center of rear brake drum. The drum and wheel fit the axle just fine. Its all back together with the pressed in studs that came with the axles. I purchased 1/2" studs that are 3" long and the pressed in studs are 2 1/2 so I will have plenty to screw to. I bought 1/2" nuts with an open end so the end of the stud will stick out.

I think the drum is centered by the axle end that sticks out, not the studs. I think you can drill them out with a normal drill and not worry if they are slightly larger because the center part of the axle will still keep it centered. You dont want to have tons of slop but it doesnt need to be super precise. A drill press would probably cause the hole to shift anyway. I would recommend you just use a stepper drill bit perhaps. Correct me if I am wrong guys.

I think Brian is saying that the ford ends require axles with a larger center post, requiring you to then open up the center hole in the drum so that it would sit flush with the axle face.

Why would you need special axles to do the ford end conversion? You press the bigger ford bearing onto the axle and that is what holds the axle into the housing so the end of the axle isnt different for doing the conversion its just that the moser axle is just bigger in the center. The Alloy USA axles I bought fit the drum perfect and they could be used if I was to do the ford conversion later.

I do.:D

Kevin, to do the Ford end conversion, You need to use Ford axle's, that have been converted to fit the 12 bolt.:( You take the Ford axle, and press on the Ford bearing, then weld the Ford Bearing housing on to the end of Your 12 bolt. Slide it in, and bolt it on.

Brian, what size tire, and what size rim's, and BS are those?

Thanks for explaining that for me Dave.

They are Hoosier Radial Slicks 30X9X15s C07, 15X10" wheels with 5" backspacing.

Ideally you want 5.5"s of back spacing so you can run a 30X10.5" tire....but when you use the 30X9 it makes the sidewall stiffer which is what you want on chevelles.

Cool, I'm looking for some CHEAP rim's, and I can find 15x10x5" backspace all day.

Would You have clearance issue's if You put a 10" tire on with Your 5" BS?

I think thats gona depend on what tire you end up using. I have good clearance after rolling the lip. Here are some pictures of mine. It will also depend on your rearend height. To do a 10" wide you might have to go with a shorter tire so it doesnt go up into the lip. I prefer a taller to wider tire, better traction with the taller tire. They have worked great for me so far.

This is before I rolled the lip.

Ya, I gotta figure something out. I just spent a Buttload on new 1/4's, and wheel well's, I'm really not interested in rolling Them.

I'm into shorter tire's, as that bring's up the gear ratio.

What gears are you running?

I would say run a big tall tire to make sure you hook everytime. Remember your in the big boy motor range, we dont need no stinkin 4.56s:eek:.

Very nice that will definitely wake it up. I went from 2.56s to the 4.11s on mine:D

Are you gona try to come to Bremerton for some TNT nights?

Dave

I've run everything from 4:10 to the 3:73's, just put the 3:08's into cruise around with alittle better. Trying to set up the second rear that I got for the track, but it's taking longer then anticipated.:(

I'll be down for a couple TNT's at Bremerton. We plan on coming on some of the weekend long event's. Just camping out, and trying to break something.

If any of you guys travel out here for Bremerton and brake something, you are allways welcome to store it my shop or use it for repairs. I'm only about 10 miles from the track.
