Not trying to scare anybody here, but I just had a question on using supplied air in a sealed up area.

So it tells me that there might be a few people that aren't aware of this.

If you seal off an area to sandblast or paint, you are creating an oxygen deficient atmosphere.

The only safe way to work or enter an area like this is with a scba ( self contained breathing apparatus ). And this scba unit should be safety inspected by some body that is authorized and trained to do it.

You should also have training by somebody that is authorized to train you.

scba and supplied air are two different systems all together, don't get the two confused with each other.

So, make sure you have some type of ventilation, coming into and exiting the area you will be using supplied air in.

You could be working and not notice that the oxygen levels are going down in the room you are in, maybe a malfunction with your equipment, you would just pass out, and expire.

Its similar to working in a confined space, and lots of lives have been lost in confined spaces because of the lack of oxygen.

I could search out all the rules and regulations and copy and paste, but this should give you a pretty good heads up on it.

One other thing on supplied air, you should have a person outside the area while you are using one for safety purposes, don't take these systems lightly.

Good points Rob. I am trained in that area because of my job. This is nothing to play with. You have to be aware of whats going on and be trained in using the scba. You just can't slap it on and go paint a car. You also will never notice the oxygen levels are off until it is to late. And yes as Rob stated you should always have a person around when you are using this stuff.
And that person should also be aware that if you pass out, that he should not enter the area, he should just get help. If you passed out for lack of oxygen then he surely will by entering the area, and then both of you are in trouble.

I have been using a supplied air system in my garage for almost twenty years now. The air pump and intake is outside the garage in a shed with the air compresser. You should always place the pump or air intake for the supplied air system outside the area that you are sandblasting or painting, in another room or outdoors.
