: Worth Calling? '72 Convert.
str8tpiperoar Feb 7th, 08, 10:22 PM Found this on the local CL...too late to call now but maybe tomorrow. Im sure its gone if it was nice.
Does it seem like a good deal from whats given? I understand you have to watch the primer & check the floors & all, but no info is given.

str8tpiperoar Feb 7th, 08, 11:01 PM Couldnt set the time down & called...going to look tomorrow...will let you know although I have a feeling itll get sold
How come nothing like this shows up in my area!?!?!?
str8tpiperoar Feb 8th, 08, 10:52 PM Alright went & looked. Seller said 5 people were there before me so I figured must not be all that great of a deal. Just like the pics, the car is in a small garage & it was pretty dark & hard to see. The interior seemed pretty nice...seat covers werent ripped & still had malibu dash...I peeked at the floor & didnt see any bad spots but would have to recheck to be sure. Frame appeared to be solid.
Trunk was pretty good except for one spot near the bumper...there was a hole with a big bolt holding something up, not sure what that is. He said 2 new quarters were installed (saw evidence of 1) although someone still did some bondo work in the wheel well areas as well as the inner rear wheel wells where their always rotted. Front fenders had some bondo issues in the wheel wells as well. The primer is painted over blue paint so the blue may have been original.
Motor looked pretty clean no exhaust past manifolds says it runs great but he didnt have a battery. 10 bolt rear. Also has a cowl induction hood & he says the flapper works although the corners near the windshield were somewhat bent as if it was stood up. Also there was some issues around the windshield with rust/rot couldnt tell with lack of light.
So basically I would like to ask what you guys think for price? I think its kinda high but with all it has (big block, 4 spd (have to check type), buckets & decent interior nice top, cowl ind. hood) what would be a fair offer/price? I would like to go look/see run again tomorrow in the light & outside as he said he may deal.
Thanks
72SSConvertibleLS5 Feb 8th, 08, 10:59 PM Josh,
Besides checking the tranny, don't forget to check the VIN number, the 5th character (Will Be A Letter) on a 1972 Chevelle and will determine what the car had for an engine when it was built.
str8tpiperoar Feb 9th, 08, 10:34 PM Well went to look again...3 other guys there dealing on it. 5th vin caracter is H for 350 2brl. 26 A paint code for Mulsanne blue/white top. Other guy said the trans was a muncie m20 but I didnt check.
Seller couldnt get it started, think it was flooded, & couldnt move it out. The area around the windshield, especially on the bottom was pretty bad with a half dollar size rot hold almost dead center. Not sure how easy to fab new metal in that area. Frame also had one bad spot in back. The interior isnt as nice as I thought....door panels rough. Overall body is decent, bondo in area like I mentioned...I just wonder how much stuff would show up if blasted
Supposedly the other guy offered 8k & seller gave me 1st chance at that price since I was there yesterday , but I declined. The guy left before me & seller was supposed to call him back (the guy didnt have the cash as of then), so I dont know if car is sold. I may call tomorrow to see.
Anyone have any opinions on if this car is a good deal at that price?
The real kicker? The guy with this car bought it off of the son of an auto mechanic. The kids dad died & left this car as well as a '67 rag top velle to the kid & sounds like kid sold them both for a little more than a song just 8 months ago. If I had only been there....
camarofreak Feb 10th, 08, 7:27 PM I have found most cars that just need paint and are already in primer are hidding tons of bondo!!! rot in the cowl area rot in the frame rot in the trunk probably tons of rot under that primer job!! wont start flooded?? sounds like alot of BS goin on!! walk away.
