: 950HP, don't just think about it....DO IT
Gandalf80 Jun 15th, 01, 9:15 AM I just swapped carbs on my 454, went from a beat up holley 700cfm dbl pumper to a 950HP. My god it is a totally different engine now. I used to have it idle at 1200rpm or it could not idle by itself, I had to brake with one foot and be on the gas with the other to keep it running while stopping. It had decent power but now what I knew it had in it.
Well, with the 950hp, it idles real nice at 800rpm with a super nice lope in the exhaust, drop it in gear and it falls to 600rpm but still idles fine (I can drive with one foot again, yay!) and HOLY CRAP does it have nuts now! The engine really feels like it woke up with this carb. It has no trouble lighting up the tires in 3rd gear while going 35mph, and not just a little squeek, a full on burnout and fishtailing when I nail the gas (actually scared the crap outta me the first time).
All in all, buy a carb worth $100, get $100 worth of performance out of it, buy a carb for $600 (these are canadian) and get $600 worth of performance out of it!!!
So if you are considering this carb but not sure if it's worth the money, IT IS!!!
I will have track results hopefully tonight to see how it helped my mph.

racer1320 Jun 15th, 01, 9:24 AM Wat to go Chris, I'm glad you finally got your hands on one.
Like I've been saying, best out of the box carb ever made bar none.
Stay with the stock jetting/calibration for your combo as it should produce the best ET and MPH.
Good luck tonight.

Gandalf80 Jun 15th, 01, 9:30 AM Ya I didn't change anything, just popped it on and adjust the idle mixture screws and idle speed, and took it for a run.
I'm HOPING that I might be able to squeek out a high 12 second pass tonight, I made a 13.4 with the old carb and NO traction, should be able to get a little better traction tonight and then this carb will help a lot.

Removed Jun 15th, 01, 10:12 AM Chris, glad to hear of your performance increase. I just purchased a Holly 1000hp and am waiting to put it on. I work out of state so I have to wait until I get home for a long weekend to put it on. Presently I am running an 850 double which works well but when the motor was built I knew it would take a larger card. So I am looking for a performance increase.

Dan Orgill Jun 15th, 01, 11:16 AM I've purchased a Holley 770 Street Avenger for my 396, but my motor is pretty mild. I'm looking forward to using it....someday....in 2002. I hope.... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif

BB_Mike Jun 15th, 01, 1:41 PM Chris Chris Chris. Lack of traction in third gear. You sure you tranny doesn't have an automatic 3-2 kickdown on WOT at certain RPMs. 'ey? Even if a 3rd gear burnout is the case, you REALLY need some tires. CantDrive55 just bought some new tires that are very squishy, but yet have very stiff side walls. VERY good tire for your car/HP!! Send him an email and find out what they where.
And get us some time slips will ya, sheesh http://www.chevelles.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

ps. I drive with two feet, why not... It's effiecient isn't it? what's the other one gonna do anyhow? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Gandalf80 Jun 15th, 01, 1:52 PM My kickdown is unhooked so I guarentee it's not kicking down, I would be able to tell anyway.
Driving with two feet sucks when you HAVE to do it. If it's by choice then that's fine.
I don't care if I have no traction on the street. The tires are new and they look good, that's all that matters.

Steve Johnson Jun 15th, 01, 3:18 PM I'm confused guys. For years every one has been telling people that the largest CFM they should use for a 454 was 750. Why isn't this engine overcarbed with the 950 CFM. What has changed?
Gandalf80 Jun 15th, 01, 3:24 PM It's 830cfm, ya it's dumb but the 950hp is 830cfm.
And depending on the application 750 is not necessarily big enough. Also the quality of this carb is far superior to my old one.

ratuned Jun 15th, 01, 4:03 PM I was looking to purchase a 950 hp but i have a mint 750 dp. would I just be better off puting the proform body on? I plan on putting a trick kit with the notched rear floats and jet extensions also. it would save me about $400. what would the difference in et be with a 454 shifted at 6000 rpm? thanx

Big O Dave Jun 16th, 01, 2:41 PM Ed, are 950HP's only for highly modified big-block engines? And what is it about this carb that makes it so good?
Please forgive my naivete regarding Holleys! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif
