: '66 Elky front disc upgrade...

Hello kids, I'm looking to upgrade the front brakes from the drum to a new set of disc brakes. I ordered the disc setup, but not the booster/master cylinder yet as I don't know which one to get.

Right now the stock master cylinder has one line coming out thats goes into a distribution block on the frame that splits it to each front wheel and a single line going to the rear.

Would I be better to up grade that to a dual line master cylinder and what size of a booster should I go with. There is a member selling a 6" booster and a dual line master cylinder for $75, will that work or is it too small?

The 6" booster will be too small. You will have to upgrade to the dual master cylinder for the disc brakes. You need to decide on manual or power brakes first for the master brake cylinder. Is your engine stock and how much vacuum does it pull? Low vacuum affects power brakes negatively.

I would like to have power brakes and I'm in the process of building a year correct 327 to drop into her. I am looking to clone the L79 motor if that helps any?

9" booster was stock in that car, and with a small block you should have plenty of vacuum and room. Also Convert to the dual master it's just smarter.

Now for my next question...I've been looking at the booster/master setups on Ebay and they seem to be going for around the $300 range, can I use a booster/master setup from a newer car, oh let's say from a junk yard?

thanks for the info guys...looks like I will just bite the bullet and spend the money to get it done right the first time. No use in wasting my time on something that will need to be "retrofitted"

I suggest you look REAL close at the disc spindles included with your disc brake conversion kit before installing them.
Specifically the lower ball joint taper hole...

MBM sells a master cylinder/9" dual dia. booster/extension rod kit for $140--I don't believe that kit comes with lines, but they have them too.
They can put together anything you need.

MBM requires a minimum purchase; try Pirate Jack-it's $5 more there, but they are easier to order from:

I believe that there is no real choice about dual reservoir master cylinders. All of the systems I have seen require a fluid supply to the front brakes and a separate supply to the prop valve for the rears. It is just to easy to do it with a dual reservoir cylinder. If you have ever driven a car with a single circuit master cylinder and popped a wheel cylinder or hose, then you no what it is like to drive a car with zero brakes. No fun at all. A dual circuit braking system is actually far cheaper to install than all new front end sheet metal.
As for the booster, take a look online for a stock replacement one from places such as Rock Auto, Checker and Autozone. Keep an eye on the core cost, if you have no core to return. Do the same for a master cylinder. You might be surprised at how much price variation there is from one seller to the next.
(The last booster I bought I got locally and it was under $100 with my old core.)

He needs the master, the booster, prop valve, and plumbing--it's easier and generally cheaper to buy a package with everthing you need instead of buying a M/C here, a booster there........ For $240 he can get everything at Pirate Jacks. They have resto stock packages or chrome packages, or whatever you need.

I'm doing a front disc swap on my '66 Elky as well. I already purchased the master cylinder/booster combo. Is there a specific prop valve for this swap or am I better off with an adjustable like Wilwood? I'm using the 12" B body brakes.
