have a set of Hooker Super Comp headers and trying to put them in the car with all kinds of trouble getting them to fit. The car is a 66 SS. The passenger side is fine but the drivers side hits the steering shaft and the lower A frame pretty hard. The engine is a newly rebuilt 454. The engine was out and the headers were put in first. It was hell getting the motor in with the headers in but now there is the problem as mentioned above. Will loosening the motor mount on that side and lifting it give enuff room to get it to fit? What is the correct way to ding the tubes for fit? Or would it not be possible with them in the car meaning the motor would have to come back out.

I cannot say if it will help with your specific problem, but on '67 and earlier big block Chevelles I like to remove the steering shaft to open up the working space during header installation.
On my '65, because I have raised exhaust ports (Brodix is +.600), I did flatten ~ 1/2" of #5 right at the steering shaft. But those were just Hooker Comps, #2455, the Super Comps you have are a tougher fit. I probably would be making more power with the Super Comps since they are closer to being equal length on the primaries, I just like the way the Comps fit better.

I installed 2" primaries hooker super comp's on my 66 big block chevelle also about 6 months ago. What a pain. One problem I had was I had small block frame mounts. I installed some big block frame mounts and then they were o.k.

Thanks for the fast replies and we called Jegs to ask about the part # and found that they sent me the headers for 68-74 chevelles. I'm sending them back to get the right ones but they will be 2" instead of 1 7/8. Will the fit be better and if it needs to be dinged will it be one tube versus 3 tubes on the ones I have? Will the 2" be too big with a 468 with 480 hp and 550 tq? graemlins/clonk.gif

they might be a little too big. The trouble I had with Hookers was that the collectors hung down too low. I had them smashed pretty good before I switched to the 1.75" dynomax coated headers.

I could'nt find 1 7/8 dynomax headers because those are the ones I wanted. Is there any way to pull them closer to the body so they won't hang so low? Can you shave the collectors or just pull them up. What is the difference between the construction of both that makes Hooker hang so low? graemlins/clonk.gif

I took the 2-1/8" Super Comps off my Chevelle and went with 2" Comps. They fit ten times better and don't hang down like the Super Comps do. You don't have to dent them for the steering and they were almost half the price too.

The #2455 that I used are 2" primary, 3.5" collector. They did hang lower than I wanted - so after bolting them up I ran a floor jack under the collector and bent them until they pointed straight back.
