I'm getting mixed messages here. I, in theory, have a "real" '70 SS 396 (now 454) El Camino, but it doesn't have a remote side mirror (in fact, it has no passenger side mirror, which I like).
Since my car now is far from original, it really doesn't matter that much, but I am curious if the remote side mirrors were standard--implying a 70 SS elco can't be a real SS without remote mirrors.

I believe it was the 71 & 72s that had them part of the SS package.

I ordered my 70 SS 454 M-22 in Feb. of 70. They do not come with the SS Pkg. or Z-15-Z-25. The option Code on the mirror is " D-33 " and it cost $ 10.55. It was a standard option on all " A " bodys in 70. In 1970 the right side mirror was not a Federal mandate at the time.
Two mirrors were mandated in 71-72 not sure. But not in 70.
In 72 or later I use to attach a clip on gutter mirror on the right side for state inspection. Then throw it under the seat untill next inspection.
The El Camino 70 remote factory mirror, Is different than a 70 Chevelle remote mirror. The mirror heads are the same, The mounting bracket that mounts on the door is El Camino ONLY. Why?
El Caminos ( GMCs) have a different shape or contour of the door shell.
P.S. El Camino Drivers carry BIGGER loads !

Driver side remote mirrors on 1970 Elky's were an option, even on SS's. The RPO code was D33. So no, all '70 SS's did not have remote mirrors unless they were ordered. There have been questions asked in the past about passenger side mirrors as well. Passenger side mirrors, remote or otherwise, were not offered from the factory in 1970. Passenger side mirrors were either dealer installed or an aftermarket accessory.
