I have a '68 chevelle with a 350. Headers wouldn
t fit without removing the starter and I came to find the starter wouldn't go back on with the headers in place. This being the case I bought a proform mini-starter and got it all tight. My issue is that my old starter had three wires going to it, a main power and two smaller wires going up towards the distributor.
My new starter has an upper terminal (power), a lower terminal, and a tab. According to the directions that came with it i'm only supposed to attach two wires, but the car won't start. I'm just going to pull out the old lines and put in new ones, so where do the two wires go?

What color are the wires and what kind of ignition system do you have? Points or HEI?

The color of the wires are blue and yellow, but I don't think they're even close to corresponding to stock as nothing else really is.
I have one of those mallory distributors with the coil built into the top. It runs off of points.
I had the yellow wire marked on my old starter so I could tell you if it was S or R if that would help, but again I think running new wires would be best.

Does this help you out?

Since your wires are not "stock" (or maybe different on my 70') follow the wire and compare to the diagram.

The new starter looks a little different.

The yellow wire was originally going to the "R" and the blue to the "S" and then a direct line from the battery. So in my new setup I was trying to run the yellow "R" wire to the spade terminal (starter switch), my power to the top post, and then I didn't know what to do with my blue wire. The starter won't turn over with just the power and the yellow line going to it.
EDIT:
After going through some older posts I've been reading something about getting a diode and attaching both the yellow and the purple (I guess the wires may be stock after all). Does that seem right?

FURTHER EDIT:
I just ran a screwdriver from the tab to the top post and the starter spins, but doesn't sound like its engaging. I just bolted the new mini-starter up to where the old starter went, am I supposed to do something else to make it work?

If you're using a HEI type distributor, you don't need the "yellow" wire. Just make sure that your +12V source for the distributor comes from the IGN terminal on the fuse box. Tape up the yellow wire, attach the blue one to the tab.
