hi,
I'm still trying to decide what to do with my tired old 283.fix it or updrade to a 502.I know that 65s had the big block option.is the sub frame on a 64 the same as a 65?if so then a big block will fit ,right? what about hood clearence? I won't cut the hood for any reason. thanks Tony

66 had a big block. A big Chevy will fit without cutting a hole in the hood.

Personally, I have never done it, but because of the 65 Z16 cars, I would bet a years pay that it is a bolt in swap.

A Mark IV big block will fit in the 64 with no problems. The 502, however, as with all Gen V big blocks, has an oil pan too large to fit in the chevelle. Moroso makes an oil pan for this application that solves that problem. I shoehorned a 502 in my 65 2dr wagon and I love it. More than enough power for the street, and a fairly smooth idle.

I know a guy who has a '64 with a LS6 and 4-spd. The car still looks like it's got the 327 in it. The 2 mufflers are tucked under the floor so nice that you barely see them from behind.
