Twilightoptics Jan 1st, 05, 9:27 PM The name of the TV movie from 1979 is Hot Rod. Here's the review:
HOT ROD (1979) (a.k.a. Rebel of the Road)
was an ABC made-for-TV movie that starred Gregg Henry, Grant Goodeve, and Robert Culp. This is one of the "alltime" kar krazy fav's, and is A MUST!
The plot in Hot Rod features our quarter-mile hero, Brian Edison (Henry), who is en-route to the fictional Munn's Rootbeer Drag Race Nationals. The "bigtime" drags are to be held in mythical Lyons, California. (The actual racing scenes were filmed at Fremont, CA.) Edison is driving a jet-black 1965 Plymouth Belvedere. This ol' MoPar is short on looks, with its spray-can paint job. But, it has awesome performance because the engine-compartment is stuffed with a fire-breathing 426-Hemi. Yes, YEs, YES!
Meanwhile, Lyons rootbeer soft drink magnate and "Hot Rod Hall of Fame" owner, T.L. Munn (Culp), has conspired to fix the upcoming drag races so that his kid, Sonny Munn (Goodeve), will win the top eliminator title. You see, then Sonny can go-on to certain fame-and-fortune. And, of course, papa-Munn can sell a train-load of rootbeer sodapop in the process, too. Good plan, huh?
"How does papa-Munn plan to accomplish all of this", you ask?
Well, every competitor who doesn't run a Munn's decal on his car gets harassed by the local corrupt cops, led by the cheezy "bought and paid for" Sheriff Marsden (Pernell Roberts). Drag racers who don't comply are run out of town, or summarily incarcerated, before the race even begins. That's how! Sheesh!
However, like a "true hot rodder", Brian just doesn't dig plastering stickers on the side of his race car. So, no surprise, he immediately develops an adversarial relationship with papa-Munn, Sheriff Marsden, and Sonny Munn.
By the way, Sonny Munn drives a hopped-up, lifted, and kustom-painted street-and-strip 1969 Olds Cutlass 2-door post sedan. Could this Lansing-mobile be packin' a dual-quad, tunnel-rammed, W-31 or W-30 underhood? Dunno. Edison suspects Sonny's Old's is just "a paint job". He may be right.
Anyway, no surprise, Brian and Sonny meet-up right away. Their first confrontation is a street race that begins at the Munn's flagship drive-in restaurant that is located in downtown Lyons. The dig concludes on the highway outside of town that runs through acres of beautiful grape orchards. But, some dirty-trick fender-bashing driving by Sonny results in Edison's Plymouth being destroyed in a spectacular end-over-end crash...Ouch!
Luckily, the ex-hippy tow-truck driver, Clay (Ed Begeley, Jr.), who comes to haul Brian's Mopar away from the crash-scene, is a kool-dude. Clay offers Brian some respite out at the laid-back roadside motel he operates with his Haight-Ashbury inspired family.
And, Edison continues to be one lucky "good-guy", when a sympathetic old junkyard owner in Lyons gives him a down-dead 1941 Willys body. That is, "IF" Brian promises to beat the hated Munn's out at the strip. Man, what a WONDERFUL fantasy!
That make of car is just what Brian had in mind in the first place. So, he installs the Hemi engine, and complete drivetrain, from his wrecked Mayflower, into the primer-gray Willys. Luckily, Brian's wacky old drag strip rat pal, Cannonball (Bruce Fischer), arrives on the scene just in the "nick of time" to help spin wrenches. Dig Cannonball's righteous-ratty ol'Stoodie pick'em up shop-truck.
When the local speed-shop owner throws a 6-71 GMC blower into Brian's little project, just for kicks, and to ensure that the Munn's are thoroughly defeated, Edison is ready to hit the staging lanes and take-on Sonny heads-up....WELL ALL RIGHT NOW!
In fact, things are looking so good for Brian that his only apparent problem appears to be that the doors on the Willys never seem to close quite right! No biggy.
Now, why a AA/GS Willy's would ever run heads-up with a C/MP Old's Cutlass in the top-eliminator finale at any kind of drag-event anywhere on the planet is never fully explained. But, lets not get bogged-down in pesky details. And, besides, the thought of handicap racing is just "too bogus" to even contemplate for true drag racers.
Anyway, Brian is one kool-dude himself, because even though he is spinning the wrenches day-and-night on his Willys, he still has time to steal the affections of Sonny's cute little carhop chick-a-dee, Jenny (Robin Mattson). Natch, this romantic move ensures that we are about to witness the duel of the century, on and off the track.
On top of that, Sonny Munn soons realizes that his chances of winning the drags have now been reduced to just about zero, even if he had the fulltime help of Dr. Oldsmobile and his pal, Elephant Engine Ernie...which he doesn't. So, with Sheriff Marsden's help, a desperate Sonny steals Edison's Willys at Clay's motel, and blows its huffed-Hemi by over-revving it on purpose. Gee, is it even possible to over-rev a Hemi?
Damn those Munn's....could Edison finally be finished?
Since Brian is an upstanding drag racer, his only hope now is to borrow another Hemi engine from somewhere so that he can continue to race the Willys. After all, there's no crime in borrowing few parts in order to win a drag race is there? Nope.
Now, it turns-out that Lyons, CA is apparently the only place on the planet with Hemi-powered AMC Matador police cars....gee, what are the odds? But, again, let's not get sidetracked with pesky details!
The big question is, does Brian Edison eventually get his hands on another elephant-motor and defeat Sonny Munn in the Rootbeer Nationals in order to preserve the honor of good-guys everywhere? Come on now, do you even have to ask? But, you'll still want to watch and see for yourself what happens.
Look, let's be honest, in Hot Rod , the story is preposterous, the directing is amatuerish, the acting is horrible, the writing is awful, and the continuity is pathetic. But, this movie is still a must-see kar-flic! They should'a made a sequel! Too, too kool!
Along the way, DJ Johnny Hurricane (Royce Applegate) keeps the oldtime rock'n'roll soundtrack hummin' along very nicely, which adds much to the proceedings.
For obvious reasons, no theater poster was made of Hot Rod ....too bad! Hot Rod really is a fun little flic and is considered to be one of the all-time hot rod movie favorites by just about everybody. You'll have some big-fun watching Hot Rod ! You betcha!
daveseitz Jan 1st, 05, 10:06 PM I do remember seeing that movie along time ago in a galaxy far far away. Just don't remember that many details. Still trying to figure out what movie it was with a Camaro. Kid had the cops pushing the car telling them it wouldn't start. Finally turns the key on and rips out of there.
dylanjans Jan 1st, 05, 10:27 PM "Aloha Bobby and Rose" has Paul LeMat driving a 68' Camaro with fender flares. It has like a two minute driving sequence where he whips all kinds of donuts in the street, takes off in front of the cops, shuts down a Mustang, and goes to the strip.
ovelle Jan 1st, 05, 11:09 PM so were can we get it??

didnt know there was a sequal to american graffitti any of the original cast...
oohhhh suzanne and your t-bird
70_FathomBlueMalibu Jan 3rd, 05, 12:55 AM Ovelle, yes, alot of the original cast came back for "More American Graffiti".
Ron Howard, Cindy Williams, Paul LeMat, Charles Martin Smith ("Toad"), Bo Hopkins, Candy Clark, MacKenzie Phillips and Harrison Ford were all onboard.
Notably absent was Richard Dreyfuss. Guess they couldn't sign him.
All I can say is that I thought it was a great movie, the last scene is tearjerker for me. Also, Harrison Ford is only in it for a few seconds and you have to pay close attention to where (and how) he pops up. I won't spoil it for ya.
FYI, I bought both Graffiti movies in a "The Franchise Collection: Drive-In Double Feature" at my local Wal-Mart for less than $15. One movie is on one side and the other is on the flipside. There is also a trailer and "The Making of American Graffiti" featurette.
Well worth picking up.
motown/malibu Jan 3rd, 05, 12:59 AM no it was hot rod aka rebbel of the road.

I don't want the movie, but I thought there's a small chance someone might know it.
70_FathomBlueMalibu Jan 12th, 05, 3:07 AM Wolfplace (Mike), wow on the tidbit of info regarding "More American Graffiti"! Any idea if you received credit at the end of the movie? I may pop it in and look for ya......... graemlins/waving.gif

Another BTW, my wife has a lot of family in Northern Ca...up in Burney, etc. I've been there once and if I get that way again, I'd love to stop by and say hi........
