I HAVE A ZZ502, AND WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE KNOWS IF THEY MAKE A .020" HEAD GASKET, OR IF YOU CAN USE ONE, ALSO, WAS WONDERING HOW TO CALCULATE HOW MUCH OF AN INCREASE GOING FROM A .040" TO A .020" GASKET WOULD BE IN COMPRESSION. graemlins/clonk.gif

I would guess about .1 to .2 .

I believe that SCE made a really thin head gasket, but I really don't think that reducing the gasket thickness is the best way to increase your compression, if that's your goal. Due to the really rough deck surface that I have seen on these motors out of the factory, I wouldn't want to risk the consequences (and I thought about doing the same thing myself). That's just my opinion.

It has been posted somewhere by somebody that used a fine little file to hand dress his heads and block down so that he got the feel he wanted on the surfaces so that he achieved good headgasket sealing.
He went on to say that this is a "feely" sort of thing and that you have to use the bolt bosses as judgement points so that you keep everything level as you remove ONLY a schosh of material off both decks!!
I figure that this is a great idea IF I wanted to take the time to do it right so that I can help my gaskets seal a little better....
I figure it falls right in there with me doing bowl work on my heads. JUST gotta take the time AND do it right!!!
