the motor and trans, of course. the rear brakes with different rotors or you can drill them to the smaller Chevelle bolt pattern. the springs would work good in a Chevelle. the front sway bar can be used. the oil, trans, and ps coolers can be swapped, as well. the gas tank and lines can be adapted to use with the efi setup on the LT1. the steering box is also a good part. the front spindles can be used, but that brings with it some serious geometry issues.
all that, and about a million little things that you happen to notice as you tear things apart.
the only change i'd make to any of it would be to get a 94 ecm to get rid of the OBD2 stuff, but the 96 ecm can be reprogrammed.

If the rear is a posi. Its worth hanging on to. You can sell it for a few bucks at least.

there is nothing special about the rears in the LT1 cop cars or Impalas. at best, it's just a standard issue 8.5 with 3.08 gears and a cone style (not rebuildable) posi that's probably worn out. most of them had open diffs- but all the LT1 B bodies that weren't wagons had 3.08 gears. the L99 (4.3 v8) cars had 3.23 gears and drum brakes on a 7.5 housing, and the wagons had 8.5's with (i think) 3.23's, and disc brakes.
pull the c clips to get the axles out of the way, and yank the disc brakes off it. slide the axles back in and reinstall the c clips so you can put wheels back in it to make easier to move the shell around after you take all the good stuff off.

Aren't they close enough to interchange with a G-body?

nope- totally different mounting points. but i've heard of people putting the spindles with their 12" brakes on G bodies with only a slight loss of steering radius and and a slight increase in bumpsteer.

Make sure it's the 350 LT1 motor -- there was a smaller motor that looked identical, I think it was 265 cubes, and cop cars didn't automatically get the 350. I know that the LAPD's fleet of Caprices mostly had the smaller motor. The quickest way to tell is to look for a dual exhaust. The smaller motor only had a single pipe on the passenger side out the back. The LT1 motor was cool and made lots of power, but had loads of problems too. Most noteworthy was the crappy distributor setup on the front of the block under the water pump. They're prone to repeated failure, and just the cap alone is over $100, not to mention that you've gotta pull the water pump, balancer and pulleys to get to it. Also note that you'll need electric fans, since the only mechanical fan setup for that motor was in a towing package, is pretty rare, and mostly sucked anyway. And that brings up another point too -- there's not much of the famous Chevy interchangability with that motor, so you're gonna have to stick with LT1-only parts. Stuff like timing chains, cams, heads, blocks, water pumps, intakes and timing covers won't interchange with regular small block parts. Other than that, it's great. I cloned an Impala SS out of an unmarked cop car, and it moved.

The LT1 motor also has a 327 stamped on both sides of the block. The best thing about the 10 bolt is the factory 30 spline axles. Add a Locker and there almost bullit prove.

if it is the small motor, i'll buy the crank and rods from it.

You can also use the rear sway bar and lower control arms.... the rears are good. No problems with the two I have owned. Rear disc, posi and lots of fun. Make sure you change out the rear diff. cover gasket w/ the correct one. The factory Arlington plant gaskets for all B-body's did not put the correct gasket in it. I did not have the two side holes to let the gear oil to the outer bearings. Correct gasket is # 26066456 2nd design, or ask for the Fel-pro equivalent. Also for SS and 9c1's the rear ends are a 5x5 bolt pattern, larger ones. :)

every B body built after the redesign in 91 has the 5X5 bolt pattern and all use the same front brake rotor, but i've heard that only the Impala's had the same rear end housing, but with longer axle shafts and associated brake rotor with more offset to it to kick the wheels out a bit farther to give it a more muscular stance. but that really doesn't make much sense to me from a production standpoint- and NAPA shows the same rotor for a Caprice or Impala SS. the 94-96 B bodies had a lighter and stronger front spindle than the older models, too. again- all B bodes used the same part.

Does anyone know if its possible to retrofit the rear end to work with a chevelle?
