I have searched all the forums and got lost. Sorry to ask this question, but could you order the 427 in an SS package in 1969?

Thank you very much.

I just found a 427 block w/ the correct casting #s 3963512 & dates for 69. I already have the heads casting #s 3919840.

So I can still keep the SS badge?????

My cousin is building a 69 GTX w/ a 440. I want to surprise him.:secret:

It depends on what car and rear end gears he's putting that 440 in, you might get surprised.:)

When you ordered a COPO 427 Chevelle, what you got was basically a car with the SS package and MP or MQ L72 engine, minus all the SS396 emblems. It seems that you could order anything that L78 cars could be ordered with. The KQ 4.10 rearend was exclusive to the 427 package. The interior was all Malibu although some did come with the SS emblem on the steering wheel. I have yet to see one with the F41 suspension although there is no reason that it couldn't have been ordered. There was a yellow one that went through Barrett-Jackson last year and it had full Malibu trim on the outside. It also had the SS hood. That was an exception to the rule. Do a Google search for COPO Chevelle and you will see lots of pictures of them.

The answer is yes..... But only if you were buying an Impala.

There were no COPO 427 SS Chevelles.

KQ 4:10 is what I have? exclusive to the COPO? I'm confused, I have seen the 4:10 in SS 396 cars. Was it special order??

Our L78 Chevelle has the KK 4.10 rearend. The only real difference between this and the KQ rearend is the specially heat treated gear set. I've never seen a KQ rearend in an SS396 car but I guess anything is possible. The guy on the line wouldn't care what he was installing.

KQ is a COPO only rear..quite valuable to those who are looking to replace one missing in a COPO..you may consider selling it and using another rear..you will have money left over.

Dale,
I just have one question.
Is it your car and is it your money that is going into the car?????????????

If so, build it the way YOU want it. Forget about what was, what was not or what could have been available in what year or what car. This business about correct this, correct that, option this, option that, has just gone waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to far.
Make YOURSELF happy and enjoy YOUR car!

The ONLY thing that I COMPLETELY agree with, is that if and when you sell the car, DO NOT try to pass it off as a factory built car. That is dishonest and wrong! :(

You know that has become my way of thinking about the Chevelle. You hear this & that about orignal, Yenko, COPO etc... They are nice if you have one, but the truth is I have wanted one of these since I was a kid pickin' cotton in the field and saw my first one.
So why not build it the way you want?
Thanks

When I first bought our COPO Chevelle, I had the dealer install the fender SS emblems with the Corvette 427 numbers underneath. Most people thought that it came from the factory that way. My two buddies had the same 427 script added to the sides of their hood bulges. I added Hedman headers, Hurst Competition Plus shifter, and 15" chromed aftermarket rally wheels so that I could take advantage of the 60 series Uniroyals that had just come onto the market. They didn't come in 14". Even back then, we built them the way we wanted. I still have the shifter, Delco CD ignition kit, and wheels. Other than the side emblems, I'll probably put it back the way I ran it back then. It might make the purists cringe but it isn't their car. ;)

To simplify things. The only SS model that actually could be had originally with the 427 was the Impala. Not Chevelle, Nova, Camaro, or El Camino.

Like already mentioned. Those COPO cars got all the heavy duty stuff like you would get with an SS car. But wasnt actually a SS model persay. Actually, I believe they were actually Malibu models.
