How many people turn 1971 SS Chevelles into 1970's SS and is it acceptable to do. Just curious. I see people turn Buick's into Chevelles. Would it be called cloned 70 SS. What are your thoughts.

I ask because my Car is a 71 SS convertible non numbers car. Every one keeps saying you should do a 70's SS Clone. I originally wanted a 70 because that's what my dad had when I was growing up. It doesn't matter to me they are both cool and I am just Glad I have a convertible Chevelle!!

It would be a 70 clone
you would need to change the whole front clip, the rear bumper, add the extra sockets for the two inner (high beem) lights and that's about it.
I'm sure it's been done before, only way for a novice to tell is by the vin

My 1970 SS 454 Sta. Wgn. was a 71, I stuck a 70 front clip on it along with a 70 Green SS dash and buckets and Wheels.
Only way to tell its not a 70 is by the Vin. It is not a clone !! You can not clone something that never was. I just call it a fraud, And I have papers to prove it!!

I thought that too.. Love the front end of the 70 and the rear end of my 72 but I don't think I would ever embreed them...

Solution... Buy a 70 and a 71/72:beers: best of both worlds

Build what you want with what you can afford... If a 70 is what you really want, do the swap. It's a lot cheaper than paying the 150% premium for a car with a vin tag that says it's a 70.

Please no, there are a billion 70SS cars at every cruise in that you goto. Keep it a 71SS, they are the most beautiful, especially those round tail lights, but then again, I am biased as I own one.

First of all, what's EMBREED? I'm guessing you meant inbreed.
IMO 71/72 taillights are fugly, the 70 looks better, and it's unique since it's only a one year deal. I say change it to a 70 all the way around and have what you want.

ahh but it is the holy grail, in fact it is the King of Chevrolet for the simple reason of the legendary LS6 and IMO it still hasn't lost it's throne ;)

the choice is simple. do what you want to do, not what others want you to do.

I personally like the looks of a 71 better than a 70 but I'm in the minority here I'm sure. If you don't like it sell it and buy one you like. I would get a 69 "the best looking year".:D

Please keep your car a 1971 Chevelle. There are TOO many 1970 Chevelle's still rolling off the production line. I guess if I wanted a 1970 Chevelle, I would just buy one.

69 the best year? the only reason so many of them are out there, is because nobody wanted them back in the day!!! Good thing there aren't many dead cats around here, 'cause when I throw 'em they hit every 69 in the area. Those taillights look like you ran out of sheetmetal an needed something to cover it......

Make it a '70, then one day the 71/72's will be in short supply and then everyone will want them too.

I also was thinking of putting a '70 clip on my '72, (non-original malibu so no harm done) leaving the rear bumper/taillights from the '72.(to have circle headlights, circle taillights) After reading this I think it'll stay a '72, but with the cooler '71 front markers. Don't forget the SS badges of course. :D

guess it all depends whether u want dual headlights or singles, and/or whether u want a combo taillight+backup light or separate taillight & backup light.
personally i prefer the 70 velle look.

a "clone" is a replication of a earlier existing vehicle. a "phantom" is a creation that previously did not exist.

Im with everyone else on this one......I own a 72 and love it. Ive been told to make it a 70 also, but the 72 has a better looking back end then a 70. And the 70 has a better looking front end. I thought about doing the same to my car until I saw a member's 71 chevelle.I don't remember who it is but they have the NICEST chevelle I've ever seen. It is a black 71 with white stripes!! Plus, go to a car show and compare how many 70's there are to how many 71's!
