: Which Lunati Cam?
1967chevelless396 Jun 12th, 04, 1:16 AM I was planning to run the small solid 272/272 LS6 replacement cam in my daily street driven 489 BB project, but got to thinking about the reliable 280/288 hydraulic piece (no valve lashing and oil splashing everywhere). :D
Here's the specs for the 2 cams:
280/288 Hyd. - 223/231, .525/.550 lift (112 LSA)
272/272 Solid - 238/238, .550/.550 lift (110 LSA)
My only reservation on the 280 is its' short .050" duration numbers of 223/231 versus 238/238 for the 272 solid. 489 cubes will swallow up that duration easily.
According to Pat Kelly's DCR program, the 272 solid gives me an 8.0 DCR which is great.
Any speculation as to which would be the best all around cam on the street for a non-radical performance BB stroker motor?
Thanks, Charles
pdq67 Jun 12th, 04, 11:04 AM Imho, go with the 272 cam and I bet you will like it!!
I went with a good old CC 282S for my 496 but it's not in my car yet. I think my DCR is a schosh below 7.7 which should allow me to easily run pump gas....
Nothing fancy at all but rather just a decent mild cam in my big motor sorta thing... (551hp at 5500rpm and 579t at 4500rpm using a single plane per D2K)
I built my motor for rolling outta the hole and then nailing her and letting grunt do the rest b/c of my M-20 and 3.31 gears.. You know, "easy does her, big boy".... To keep from breaking things sorta deal..
Looking back at everything, a 268 advertised duration solid cam closing the intake valve at 60 would give me a schosh above 8 DCR, and put my torque above 600, (604 at 2500 and 3000rpm), but drop my hp below 500, (485 at 5000rpm), if a person was REALLY after grunt!!! (Using a dual plane intake per D2K)..
BUT then you probably couldn't hook that much grunt up anyway???????

Charles, The 272/272 solid cam's 238/238 duration actually equates to about 230/230 in a hyd cam after lash is taken into account. I have that cam in my 396 (404) with a 112 LSA and it idles almost exactly like the L78/LS-6 cam I had, which wasn't real radical. I'm guessing either the 272/272 solid or 280/288 hyd in a 489 would idle pretty smooth and have a lot of low end (something you probably don't need more of) but fall off on the top end. If it were me with that many cubes, I'd go with the 276/284 solid or 288/296 hyd.
1967chevelless396 Jun 12th, 04, 2:08 PM PDQ67, you and I think a lot alike in regard to low rpm, grunt stroker BB's. :D
I'm able to get a calculated 8.0 DCR for my 489 due to 063 closed iron ovals and using a thin .022" steel shim head gasket in combination with flat top pistons.
Von, I did consider that 276/284 solid, but backed off due to the cam's high advertised RPM range of 2500 to 6800. I wanted to keep revs to about 6000 or under.
Thanks, Charles
pdq67 Jun 12th, 04, 3:03 PM Yes, I know what you mean..
I'm using reworked 3/8" bolt, truck rods so I just self-imposed about a 5700/5800 rpm limit b/c my hp is max. at 5500 with the 282S cam sorta deal..

Charles,
I gotta go with Von all the way here. I don't know where they came up with 6800 but that cam will make peak power somewhere around 58-6000 in a 489.
Big engines like cam, don't be afraid of it.
The 276/284 will not be too big.
It may well rev to 6800 but the power will be headed south very rapidly ;)
supersport6667 Jun 12th, 04, 7:29 PM I would go with the bigger cams VON and Wolf recommended. When they give RPM ranges on cams thats just a general range. A 396 and a 500 cubic inch motor rpm range with the same cam will probably be about 600-800RPM different due to the added cubes the cam has to feed. A cam thats makes power in a 396 from 3000-6000 will be more like 2400-5400 in a 500 CID motor.
