Does anyone know the largest tire I can fit in the rear of my 69 chevelle or elcamino without mini tubbing or frame alteration? I am looking for width not so much as hieght.

Thanks

No one searches any more - wheel tire section. Oh well - here's my guess - you have 12-1/2 inches aprrox with no adjustments to the wheel well. Some say its 13 but there's a bump in the inner well for strength about an inch above the lip. Generally you'll be well stuffed with an 11" with 305s. You'd have to maximize your back space which can vary a little depending on the mfg/brand you go with (most rim mfgs know what to provide) - I think you'd be able to go as far as a 315 with the right backspace. I nice wide tire would be a 11" step or 10" fat/smooth lip ... run 295s. My guess is you need 5-3/4" backspace if not 6". Pictures are 275s on a 10" fat lip rim.

I put 295's on mine to be safe. I don't remember the backspacing, but as Harrod said it's been asked many times and more info is available using the search capability in the tires and wheels section on here.

I tucked 315s on the rear of mine on an 11 in wheel with 6.5in of backspacing. It rubbed the fender well so i had to roll it. I suppose this bothers some but my quarters arent original. Since then I really havent had any problems and i think it looks great. Good luck.

BTW. I came across the info I needed to fit the wheels by searching the wheel and tire database on this site.

With 15 X 7 Chevy rally wheels I had lots of room with the old L60 x 15s. Corvette rally wheels don't have enough back spacing and 255 x 60s are getting pretty close to the outside lip. Nothing worse than tires rubbing all the time.

You can stuff a 315/35/17 on 11" wide wheels in there if you measure carefully and roll or cut the lips. You'll need to run spherical rod-end style upper control arm bushings to keep from rubbing though, as rubber bushings allow too much lateral movement, and poly bushings suck on C4L rear suspensions. There's 13" of clearance in there, so a 12.5" tire section-width will fit. If your suspension is set up correctly, it will not rub.
