Ok, so I finally got some time to work on this thing again! I was wondering if anyone could help interpret this pattern, thanks in advance!

Drive side:

It looks a little deep to me. I was thinking about removing .010" from the pinion. Unfortunately, I set this up about two months ago so I forgot what I have in there now!:clonk:

I wish your drive side looked like your coast side. I agree you need a little less pinion shim 010 might be alittle much.

Agreed the drive side the "wipe" is going too close to the end of the tooth, if it goes to the end it shears the oil out from between the gears rather than allowing it to flow between. Your very very close!

add about .003 shim to the pinion. be sure the backlash is correct. tom

So ADD .003 to the pinion? BTW, does anyone know where to get a quality bearing seperator? The harbor freight one i have sucks, it doesn't grab the bearing right.

Rian,

The March 2007 Chevy Punch issue from here at team Chevelle had a very comprehensive article on rebuilding 12-Bolt rears. He included part numbers for the tools. The bearing separator you want is listed in the article. It is from McMaster-Carr (sp?) and is Part Number 6342K2. I had the Harbor Freight one also, and on the third pull, it blew apart and trashed my bearing in the process. This is a place where cheap is definitely more costly.

Ok, how does this one look. I added about .005 and it was wayyy too deep so I removed about .007 from the original and got this pattern. Is this better?

BTW, this is a new richmond set with .010 backlash as recommended.

it looks to me you are close. .003 more shim on the pinion. you want that contact pattern even on top and bottom of tooth. check out this pic. different brand but you will get the idea.
by the way can't you hold still when taking pic's? just kiddin.

Ok, so i messed with it some more by removing from the pinion and the pattern just will not get away from the toe on the drive side so I decided to start from square one. I ended up adding a little more to my FIRST thickness and got this:

Drive:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/rianbechtold/IMG_0090.jpg

Coast:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/rianbechtold/IMG_0091.jpg

I'm a little happier with the pattern on the drive side because it's finally moving towards the center of the tooth!

if the back lash is good. then i would say to stab it in for the last time.
