: Big Cowl ?
SDuster11 Jan 12th, 04, 11:37 PM I currently have a steel hood cowl hood (functional might I ad) and I want to replace it with a fiberglass cowl hood (bolt on). I'm thinking in the lines of a 4 inch. And the best deal I've found so fat is $450 plus shipping. Anybody in the know of where I could find one cheaper? thanks,
Dustin
RussD Jan 13th, 04, 12:42 AM Dustin,
Us Body Source and Fiberglass trends will both run you cheaper, however, you really get what you pay for. In this case I would spend the 4-500 on a Glasstek or a VFN hood. Experienced this with my buddies Nova, he bought one of the cheaper brands then had to spend booko bucks getting the hood right at the bodyshop. Then on my daily driver 5.0 I had a 3" Harwood on it, driving down the freeway I had the hood lift up pulling the hoodlatch right out of the fiberglass and the hood flying up and smashing the metal cowl on the car. The Harwood was a fluke on my part, I paid half price for it as a factory second(thought it was just that it didnt line up right) The hood on my buddies Nova not fitting very well at all is not though. Many of people on here have raved for Glasstek and VFN, if I were in your shoes I would spend the extra dough and order from either of those companies. If I ever buy a glass hood for my 65 it will be one of those two companies, and if the 5.0 ever gets another glass hood it will be a Cervini's.(which is really a shame they don't make glass for classic's because they're work is PRIMO)
chevy_69_chevelle Jan 13th, 04, 10:25 AM I have a fiberglass trends hood and am happy with it. When taken to the paint shop that said that the hood needed a little work to get some waves out, but not too bad. The under side has no work done to it, and you can see the fiberglass mesh and everything, but I don't know how that compares to other companies. The hood is on my car on my website below.
BTW...mine is a 4"

chevy_69_chevelle Jan 13th, 04, 12:32 PM yes ken...what do you think I was talking about? :D
Bob West Jan 14th, 04, 8:06 AM I have the Harwood 4" cowl with the show quality finished underside,,,its a beautiful hood,I don't use the latches, hood pins only...and don't forget to put the hood pins in...did I mention this is my second Harwood hood...thats what happens when you don't install the hood pins graemlins/clonk.gif
SDuster11 Jan 14th, 04, 8:53 AM So it looks like that Hardwoods the one to get. But do you'll think 4" will be suffecient? Because IMO more than 4" is to much. Let alone the visibility out of the car. Where would be a good place to look at getting the hood. Hardwood themselves, Jegs, Summit, ? (any good deals or 10% off deals going on or coming up? O and where would be a good place to sale my current steel FUNCTIONAL hood WITH WORKING FLAP and how much do you'll think it would be worth? Does anybody else got pics of 4" Cowls on their car? thanks
bowtie455 Jan 14th, 04, 4:06 PM SDuster11,i did it the hard way and installed the harwood 4" cowl on my factory steel hood.my ride is a 73 chevelle and i think the 4" cowl is just about the limit in height.i think anything taller on a 73 would be annoying and possibly dangerous as an obstruction of driver vision.i'm very happy with my choice.
Texas70 Jan 14th, 04, 4:24 PM How is this ? I forget who's car this is, but it really looks good. Also check out Scott (Blaauboer)'s Silver '70. I plan on doing what bowtie 455 did and use my original stock hood (no cowl) and install a Harwood 4" outlaw on it. I ordered it today from Summit for $109. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

SDuster11 Jan 15th, 04, 12:44 AM Thanks Texas 70' I had seen Blaauboer's and it looks BAD ASS I hadn't seen that Blue w\white stripes 70' and I love it. My car has the same paint scheme and it gives me a better idea of whatit would look like. Can you say new background on the desktop... :D
I saw that the blue 70' had "502" in blue on the white stripes that looks good but any ideas as to what else you could put there. Because I think there needs to be a little something to set it off. I have a 350 but that kinda seems a run of the mills. What about a bowtie symbol or "Chevrolet" or anybody got any better suggestions? thanks
bowtie455 Jan 15th, 04, 9:38 PM SDuster11,i found some pretty cool looking chrome emblems in a speedway catalog that might look good on a cowl scoop.some say chevrolet, hotrod, prostreet, etc.i also thought about getting the "hurst equipped"emblem.
Ron_Long Jan 15th, 04, 10:28 PM SDUSTER11 If your 70 is an SS car. You might want to look at the rear quarter emblems from a 66 or 67 Chevelle Super Sport,
Letters might be alittle small for a 4" hood.
Ron.
SDuster11 Jan 16th, 04, 12:25 AM Great Ideas but I only got a lil 350 (non original SS) and I don't want to make a fake clone if you know what I mean. you got's any other ideas?
Also do you'll think it would look better painted or an actual chrome metal emblem? to set it off?
bowtie455: What all else did you see in the speedway mag?
And thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it!!
pegleg71 Jan 16th, 04, 12:51 AM *drools* Those are some BEAUTIFUL cars!!!! You guys are lucky to have them. WOW! Very nice

Texas70 Jan 17th, 04, 11:00 AM SDuster11, I was thinking about that very thing last night (what to put on the side of the scoop) and remeber a boat I had a few years back. I had some 4" vinyl, stick on letters made that said "Hailey's Comet" (mt daughter's name) across the back of the boat on the gunwale and they looked awesome. They were a quality product.
I remember the choice of point size and font were endless, in fact I think you can do your own .eps file and they can cut that vinyl from that file.
This way, you can avoid drilling and can change it easily at ant time with minimal effort. Usually, any of these mom and pop sign stores can make these for you. I was also planning on using them for any window text I may use for my bracket racing. The sky's the limit :D
chevydog66 Jan 17th, 04, 6:46 PM SDuster11 paint it on. An emblem will give you more wind drag. Just kidding. I have seen a place called Tamraz's selling 4" fglass hoods on ebay for $360. I am considering one for my 66. I talked to a guy named Mark there the other day and he guarantees and excellent hood. They also sell bumpers and other things for Camaro's and Cutlass's as well.

SDuster11 Jan 18th, 04, 2:10 AM Hey I looked for a cowl on ebay for a 70-72 for $360 but couldn't find one. Can you help me out?
And you raise a good point about the wind resistance. j\k
chevydog66 Jan 18th, 04, 4:09 PM What about this one? I'm not sure of the height you are wanting though.

chevydog66 Jan 18th, 04, 4:13 PM I guess Tamraz's doesn't make a cowl hood for the 70-72 Chevelle. Here's the phone # for them. They just might make them but don't have them for sale yet. 1-800-442-4601.
chevydog66 Jan 18th, 04, 4:32 PM Or this one. It is made by Tamraz's.
