What is the best rack and pinion setup for a '65 Chevelle? We looked at the Unisteer setup. The pinion/rack seems to stick out the front of the unit, and separate from the cylinder as opposed to most of the Mustang II units. Is this to be expected? It looks lightweight and 'donkey'. Unisteer has an excellent downloadable installation manual that includes lots of great pictures. Any one already done this conversion? New to this forum, and unable to find it if this is already covered in a tech tips section.
Thanks

I have looked at that myself for my '68....but I am not sure that it offers any advantages over a good traditional setup so I am skipping that upgrade....curius to see what others say here..

good luck..

The ONLY advantage to R&P steering is that it weighs about 25lbs less.

For a lot less money you can get a very good fast ratio box, and have the same performance and feel.

I have one in my 66. I t is installed but the car is not on the road yet. It was a very easy install and looks good. I am a dealer for Unisteer and had not planned on putting one in but Dave from Unisteer gave me a deal I could not pass up. I looked at the Flaming River set up and the Unisteer unit looks like it is a better set up. I am also dealer for Flaming River so not to take anything away from their product but the Unisteer kit is a lot less expensive so for the average guy I would think it would be more feasible.

I have a few pics of the rack installed but I forgot my son is in them lol he was having some fun with dad in the shop that day. Anyway here are a couple of pics with it just more less sitting in place not totally bolted up.

One thing to know is it uses a 3 way joint set up I have a pic of that too but i had to play with it a little because of my CPP upper control arms. They stick out a little far compared to stock arms.

Let me know if you have any questions I will be glad to answer anything I can.
