The 1968 energy absorbing column is probably the worst steering column to try and fit into your 1965. It was the first generation, collapsible, energy absorbing steering column and it had one very big deficiency in that it was very "limp" in bending. That is why all GM columns in the 1967-68 era had very large mounting brackets under the dash with three or four attachment points. This was a "band-aid" to try to stiffen up those first gen columns and keep them from bouncing up and down in your hands.

The 1965 column had a one piece tube that formed the jacket and was very stiff in bending. You would need to really beef up your dash and fabricate something to grab on to the '68 mounting bracket.

Jim

PS: One other caution. The solid tube 1965 column might have added rigidity to the dash of your 1965. The 1967-68 first gen column will not.
