: 82 Cutlass question
Bob West Jul 31st, 04, 10:53 AM My son bought a 82 Cutlass that he is going to swap his 355 out of his truck in to,anyway,is there anyone that makes a heater box for the firewall that deletes the a/c part, yet retains the heater? I've seen them for our cars, but didnt know if anyone made them for the G-body. Thanks
dirtrocker Jul 31st, 04, 11:02 AM Although I've never done the swap......you can get one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7913809394&category=33548
but my understanding is that you need to swap not only what's under the hood but everything under the dash for it all to work properly. Pretty big deal.
Get's hot round here........I'd just keep the AC graemlins/thumbsup.gif
LeoP Jul 31st, 04, 12:21 PM The 355 will fit without removing the A/C stuff. I think there other things to do such as moving the fuel lines to the other side of the car, I could be wrong.
dirty_dawg Jul 31st, 04, 12:59 PM I saw an '80 Cutlass that came factory A/C delete, not sure if the box will fit or not.
TooSlow Jul 31st, 04, 8:18 PM I just did this swap on an '83 Regal. The engine definitely fits with the heater/ac box left in place--why not just leave it? I have to relocate the fuel line from the driver's side to the passenger side, and if you plan to run headers you will also need to relocate the passenger side brake line. If you plan to retain the fuel vapor return line on the driver's side it will also have to be relocated when using headers.

71350SS Jul 31st, 04, 10:17 PM Just so you know, when the Cutlass was downsized in 1978 it became the G -body car we all know and
love. One of the engines straight from the factory was a 305 chevy vin code H.A chevy 355 small block will drop in no problem.Uses clamshell style motor mounts. This is the same chassis as a Monte Carlo SS so parts are available.
Bob West Aug 1st, 04, 11:50 AM What year did they start running all chevy motors in the BOP cars? Wouldnt the fuel lines all be on the passenger side?
BlueSS454 Aug 1st, 04, 6:06 PM I dropped a 355 in my 86 Cutlass that had a 307 olds in it. You have to remove the frame mounts and get the chevy mounts from the auto parts store or another chevy with the clamshell style mounts. The battery needs to be moved to the other side as well. The fuel lines stay in place, and the charcoal canister gets moved over to where the battery was. Other than that, t was a pretty straightforward swap. I took the AC out of the car too, but I left the heater box in there. You can get at all the spark plugs without a problem. If you put manifolds on, you have to go through the wheel wells, if headers, from the top.

dirtrocker Aug 1st, 04, 8:27 PM Depends on what it had in it.........if it was a 3.8 V6 car (there were alot of those), the fuel line will be on the wrong side.
Did my lil bro's regal like that..... just ran a hard line across on the frame. Guess you could run an electric fuel pump and it wouldn't matter.
Xtreme70SS396 Aug 1st, 04, 10:24 PM You've obviously already got the 355, but an Olds 403 is the exact same size block as the Olds 307 and is a cinch to swap. May be worth a look in the long run.

Owners of some 76-77 Buick-Olds-Pontiacs successfully sued GM claiming they were shafted when 350 Chevy small blocks were substituted for BOP 350's due to shortages. In 1978 GM downsized all divisions, all the motors were deemed corporate v-8 to block anyone from sueing them. The fuel lines could be on either side depending on which motor you ordered.

The only problem with 403's and Olds engines in general is they are more expensive to built than a SBC. Also have to take in core availability when choosing to do one. As far as keeping it at a minimum cost, the 355 is the way to go. An Edlebrock aluminum intake for an Olds engine alone is well over $200. I priced one for the 455 in the 69 Cutlass and it was almost $300  I personally love Oldsmobile engines, so much you can do with them and no one expects to see one when you open the hood graemlins/thumbsup.gif
