Most guys running heavier cars prefer oval port heads, but depending on what other parts you have in the combo, the 990 heads can do very well even keeping the rpms below 6500 which is where I shift my 454 at(6200-6300 shifts for me). My cam is a bit on the larger side and I believe thats why I have had better results with the rectangles vs. the 049 ovals I had.

With a different cam and properly setup ovals, I could very likely run even better than my current setup for my heavy Nova. My '67 Camaro that weighs almost 500 pounds lighter I would choose the 990s.

Rectangular port heads can be an emotional topic here and I hope I haven't gotten anyone excited by my views. Feel free to disagree. smile.gif

my car has the 990 heads and I think they do okay. My car is a 454 car with a 4 speed that sees 99 percent street duty with an occasional flog at the track. Seems like every time I take it to the track I lay into it like it is one of the race cars and I break it. That is what happens when you treat a street car like a race car. :)

My motor is a 454, solid flat tappet cammed, open plenum 850 topped BBC. My best MPH in the 1/4 is 114 with the car weighing in at 3706 (if I remember right)last time out.

here is the worst thing, The heads have a TON of miles with no work to them. They were the kind of deal where they were there so I used them to get me up and running. the short block is new but the heads have been around the block. I built the whole engine for next to nothing.
on the down side--- the chambers are a lil big at 118 for me. I had to use some decent size domes to get the thing to make any CR. I guess thats my biggest complaint. I kinda like losing some torque down low. keeps me out of trouble in the 60 which is hard enough with the stick and radials.
