: drag strip....setting toe in???

How much toe in does a person want on a car that sees more strip than street. I installed new springs a couple weeks ago and the car sits 1.5" taller now. So yesterday I thought I'd measure with a tape and I have 1/4" toe in now. Since I do drive it on the street, where would be a good place to have it set? 1/16th" or zero? How much does it toe in as it raises? With 1/4" toe in, how much e.t. am I scrubbing off? a tenth or so? TIA

1/16" to 1/8" is fine. The chassis builder who did my dragster told me that I could run close to 3/16" if I wanted when we were running 190 mph+ in Comp Eliminator, as he felt that would help it from wanting to drift around so much at that speed especially with no front or rear wings on the car. I left it alone though at 1/8" and never had any issues. Had it set there too in the funny car. Ditto the same setting in the Mustang II door car I ran. You need to run the suspension through its travel to see how much bump steer you have. It takes a bit of dinking around to get the toe change during travel down to a minimum. Usually it means working with rack and pinion mounting and rod end spacing in a race car. In a street car with OEM type steering linkages it can be more of a challenge to correct. Find the ride height you are at downtrack and then set it there to 1/8". IMO 1/4" is far too much toe-in.

Thanks Steve, I figured it was too much. I posted at DRR also. The front end comes up much higher than before, with the new springs when the converter is loaded, so I imagine it has waaaay too much toe in, probably hurting my 60's quite a bit.

My nova was running 14.60's over 15 years ago, and I noticed the front end wandered a bit. A complete rebuild and proper front end alignment dropped ET's into the 13.80's. NO EXAGGERATION!!

I run 0.00" toe and about 2-2.5° positive caster to keep it steady at high speeds. Works great.

WOW...align the front end and I can run high 10's...lol...the front end is tight, just too much toe in with the new springs. I hope to get the 60's back down in the 1.6 range...Thanks Roadknee smile.gif Before the springs I was at 1.71-1.73,,,saturday it was 1.76 and up...

Bob,
if you front end is picking up alot when you load the converter then you're loosing suspension travel, which is killing your 60ft's.

What springs did you choose, what do you set your shocks at (Which shocks?).

Cheapy Summit adjustables Brian(I know,I know),,,set at 70/30. I mean the front end never came up this high before with the old springs. But yet,my 60's are better if I bring it up to 2000 vs. 1500 rpm.

Chevelles front susp normally toe in badly as the front end rises. It usually requires a height adjustment of the outer tie rod knuckles to correct or minimize. There are spacer kits made to accomplish this. I think Global West makes them.

Loading or not loading the suspension using the converter when footbraking is not always a "set in stone" deal. Some testing will determine which method provides the best runs for each car, with no two necessarily the same. My .02 is to test, test, test.

Hey Bob, on my Nova the front end will toe in 1/8" between static and 2.5" up. So we set it at 0 toe in static, that gives some toe in at speed. Have the alignment guy test it sitting static then jack the front end up, it might surprise you how much it moves.

You going to the Kan on Friday? Let's line em' up if you're there!

Toe-in....1/8" = 3.1 milimeters(in dutch)!!.
Is the front of the car not nervous with this toe-in Steve??.

Or.....Do you use a nice possitive caster!
And a possitive camber!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

505...Its hard for me to make TNT at the Kan on fridays, I don't get off work til 6:00pm. I have done it before, but can't make it this week. I used to race regularly at the Kan,went to a couple fun drags last november after OIR closed for the winter. Saturday is opening day for points at OIR so thats where I'll be graemlins/thumbsup.gif I do plan on racing at the Kan May 8 when he has his first heads up/index race. I'm going to run in the 12.00 class. I will run at the Kan this year as long as schedules don't conflict, but I've heard they are going back to running their bracket races on saturday nights also, once it warms up. I don't think I can keep up with a 505 Nova, if thats what you have in it :D

Guess we'll have to wait till the heads up race then. I just wish Carl would figure out what he's doing with the slower heads up class.
