: Need Help, Engine Not Starting, Fuel Pump??
thizzlamik Jan 25th, 08, 12:11 AM i have a 1968 chevelle with a crate 350 with about 15k miles on it...so heres what happened..i was driving and all the sudden engine dies...after pulling over the engine wont start..i had gas still as indicated on my gauge but even put a couple gallons in..still no luck...so i tried to pull a little gas into the carb..engine would start for only for a couple seconds..it would die after apply gas and idle..i think only the gas we put into the carb was combusting...so i ask a few people about whats going on and theyre saying it could be fuel pump, filter, carb, distributor, spark plugs...so today me and my friend changed the mechanical fuel pump and filter...still the engine would not start...then we was wondering if gas is even shooting to the carb...so we unpluged one side of the fuel filter to see in fuel would come out when applying gas but no gas was shooting out...did we install the fuel pump incorrectly or can it be a carb problem...im a newb with this engine stuff and i'm willing to learn and take any advice...any help would be greatly appreciated..thanks in advance..
66sc Jan 25th, 08, 12:28 AM Squiting gas in the carb and then it starting suggests a fuel delivery issue, as you figured out.
I know you said that you replaced the pump, but if needed, put a slow/small charger on the battery and let it charge overnight, then connect a hose to the fuel line and put the other end in a jug/can and spin the motor over for 15-30 seconds.
It should send gas into the can. If not, its remotely possible that the fuel pump is bad, (assuming a stock type mechanical pump) or installed so that the push rod off the cam isn't engaging the pump lever. Or, it may just be low on gas, but you said it isn't.
My old Chevy truck doesn't like to start unless I pump the gas continuously while cranking it. They have personality.
Good luck! Remember: fuel, air, and spark is what's needed to make the engine run, assuming its capable of couse...
thizzlamik Jan 25th, 08, 3:52 PM no gas was squirting out...so im thinking i might of installed the fuel pump wrong..can anyone give me a some advice on how to install th fuel pump, like how to make the rod go into perfect position onto the pump lever...this is what i did: after i took out the old pump, the push rod was long...so i crank a couple times till i noticed it became shorter and had to push it up to put onto the pump lever...did i do something wrong? is the push rod stuck and not engaging on the pump lever?...i was also wondering if there could be some type of blockage from the gas tank to the fuel pump...so does anyone have any ideas on how to clean out the fuel lines? thanks 66sc for the info man! any help would greatly be appreciated. thanks guys!
chas59 Jan 26th, 08, 7:15 AM If you can blow back through the fuel line with some compressed air, that should clear any blockage. Do no build up to much pressure in the line, if you have a blow gun for a compressor, just remove the line to the pump from the tank, put tip of blow gun in line, and just tap the air lever so you get bursts of air, not a continuous stream. As for the fuel pump rod, as long as you got it on top of the pump lever, that should be working properly. Hope some of this helps.
creent Jan 26th, 08, 8:56 AM I had the same problem with my 72 Chevelle. Thought it was the fuel pump so I swapped for an electric pump, still didnt start. Checked pump with can of gas and it was pumping. I concluded it was a problem inside gas tank. When I started the process of disconnecting tank fuel lines I discovered the short piece of rubber hose going to tank had a crack, I replaced and everthing worked. Good luck
thizzlamik Jan 26th, 08, 5:45 PM just got it running! i guess we installed fuel pump right when we did notice gas squirting out the hose when disconnecting the filter.so i tried to put a lot of gas into the carb and applied gas while cranking and the engine magically started. thanks for you help guys!
