: how does this suspension set up sound (on a budget)
BowtieAaron Jan 24th, 08, 5:46 PM well, next winter i want to rebuild the suspension on my 71.
here is what i was thinking.
front-
stock drum spindles worked for disk brakes
- maybe b-body spindles
04 vette front rotors
72 chevy truck half ton calipers.
68 vette 1 1/8" MC
possible power brakes
Wilwood adjustable prop valve
not sure here yet but
stock lower control arms boxed, or speedway motors tube lowers
unsure of upper arms
all new moog steering peices, and bushings in the front.
Stock 15/16 front bar with current poly end links, and bar bushings
Rear-
80 T/A Rotors
80 Malibu Front calipers
80 malibu hoses
brackets
currently have jegs adjustable upper arms, and lift bars down below, so those are staying.
no bar in the rear
Springs will be 550/150 rates
shocks, unsure yet, maybe the hotchkis revalved shocks.
and i already have the ZJ Jeep steering box.
i hope these brakes will work with 15" wheels, if not, ill be running some nice wide 17" torq thrust II's.
so what do you guys think?
hoping i can get a inch or two drop from all this also.
it wil be a daily driver, so i want it to stop, and handle real nice.
best plus is, i work part time at a auto parts store, so i can get most of the stuff for almost nothing.
thanks

pist0lpete Jan 25th, 08, 1:47 AM Well for starters you should probably drop the B-body spindle idea as you will help the camber curve but open up pandoras box in terms of bump steer. You would be better off staying with the stock spindle in that case really. The best option on a relative budget really is to do the SC&C stage II plus tall ball joints which effectively make the spindle taller and improve bumpsteer over stock not worsen it. You have the right idea with the speedway springs and adjusters you mentioned in your other thread. Not sure if the lower lift bars will be ideal for handling as they are for drag racing but maybe somebody can chime in here and give a bit more insight as to why they may or may not work. With the spring rates you speak of the revalved hotchkis bilsteins should be a good match. Haven't heard much about the speedway motors lower control arms but the new lowers from SC&C are an extremely nice piece. Hope this info helps.

Aaron,
I agree with Neal...
IF you got the B-spindles, you pretty much need new upper control arms (I have seen it done with offset shafts and lots of shims...
The cost of the upper arms is probably going to be similar to the SC&C Stage2 package which will allow you to use your stock spindles, inprove the suspension geometry...
Companies such as Kore3 have brackets that bolt directly to the stock drum spindle, and you can mount C5 Corvette calipers and rotors. The only modifications are to turn down the outer diameter of the stock drum hub to fit inside the vette rotor (if your store does brake rotor turning, I imagine you could do this easily)... You will have to run 17"+ wheels for this swap though. Pretty sure 15" wheels won't clear the C4 Vette swap you mentioned either...
I used the 67-76 Corvette "Manual" brake master, and picked up a Summit" adjustible prop valve (looked identical to the Wilwood)... Brake hoses might need modifying, but places have specific lines available (like Kore3).
Rear discs are cool, but not really necessary in most (street) cases... Personally, I'd go with the later Camaro rear discs before the '80s malibu fronts swapped on the rear...
Not the correct thing to do, but I actually ran for years with a 4 wheel disc master cylinder and rear drums, with no problems (I don't know how effective, or ineffective, the rear brakes were)... I planned the swap, but never got around to installing the rears...
IMO, tubular front lower A-Arms won't do alot to improve handling on the street... BUT, remember your current arms are about 35 years old... Metal fatigue.
Classic Gary Jan 26th, 08, 1:10 AM here's how i'm doing it:
2" dropped AND 2" tall spindles from Matt's Classic Bowties, $279.00 plus the ride (ebay)
caliper adapter from ? (damn I can't remember, i'll get the info later) $60.00 shipped (posi web site)
'99 newer Z28 rotors and aluminum calipers and mounts $100.00 shipped (ebay)
Southwest Racing upper tubular control arms, $42.00 each plus ride
Speedway Motors tall or extended upper ball joints $14.00 each plus shipping
So, I've got 12" front disc brakes with aluminum calipers that I can replace at any Auto Zone or Checker, ect.
Suspension parts that can be fixed or replaced easy/cheap, (read that Auto Zone or Checker)(except the upper control arm, but how often does that really go bad?)
upper and lower ball joints are easy to get, both have MOOG part numbers.
No, it ain't "trick" but it will work and it's budget.
BowtieAaron Jan 26th, 08, 1:59 AM are the camaro calipers and rotors for the front or rear? or all around?
to clear a 15" rim, they will need a little grinding i suppose?
thanks.

Classic Gary Jan 26th, 08, 1:25 PM i don't know if the 15" wheels will fit, i'm not that far along. i'm going to go with 17" anyway, just 'cause i want to buy only one set of wheels.
Classic Gary Jan 26th, 08, 1:26 PM my rear disc brakes are a combo of hot rod and stock parts 'cause of the ford 9" rear and i got 'em REAL cheap !!
airrj Jan 30th, 08, 6:43 AM I have posted a review of my brake system here:
http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=132848&highlight=hawk+brake
I have run these brakes under 15x7 Rally's and 15x7 5-spoke SS rims without problem. I have been very happy with the system and I have tried a few combinations of caliper sizes and the extra large front calipers work very well with the large rear calipers. Search around here for my name and there should be more on my brake system if you are interested.
BowtieAaron Jan 30th, 08, 9:56 AM awesome! thanks R.J.
what year are the calipers from? 2 or 4wd?
ill do some earching on your brake combo..
thanks again.

airrj Jan 30th, 08, 2:46 PM I believe the years were late '80's. Ask for the JD7 option brakes. They look the same as most from that time frame, just the piston is a bit larger. Overall I am very happy with the system for the price. The biggest difference that you will have to figure out is how to get a 12.00" x 1.25" rotor for the stock A-body spindle. I am sure that there is a way to do that.
I have the B-body spindle, but at the time that was the best option. I would look at keeping the A-body spindle as well.
BowtieAaron Jan 30th, 08, 6:03 PM thanks again.
so, 12" isnt to possible with the stock spindles? why is that? no caliper bracket location?
thanks.
aaron
p.s. your website doesnt work rj.
Classic Gary Feb 1st, 08, 1:37 PM the spindles from Matt's are exactly like the stock parts, in that, ALL the stock disc brake parts will bolt on. It's just a "stock replacement only better" part. So yes, 12" Camaro rotors will fit the stock "A" body spindles, (with the caliper bracket from (the Posi web site).
12" LS1 BRAKES
Rich Hoag is selling caliper brackets for the 98-02 ls1 camaro firebirds they fit 67-69 Camaro, 64-72 Chevelle, 68-74 Nova. Price is $60 plus shipping. contact him at: rwhoag.camaro1@verizon.net
