I was helping a friend wrench today. He was untighting a bolt when the wrench slipped and he cut a vein on the top of his hand. The blood started to squirt out of his hand like he was giving blood. We put pressure on the cut and got the bleeding under control. He started to get light headed and almost fell down, so we called 911 (I think it was from worry). He was feeling better before the ambulance got there. We took him to a clinic to get the cut cleaned up. A word to the wise, be careful.

Those mechanics gloves are awesome for those kind of dings. They allow you to put more force on a bolt without holding back for fear of punching something.
-A few years ago my grandmother cut herself while cooking (pealing something). Sliced the wrist vien vertically!! Sad thing wa, the paramedics restrained her becuase they thought it was a suicide attempt. Insurance saw this in the report and didn't want to pay. Real mess.

I hope he's OK, been there, done that...
Yep, jackstands, mechanic's gloves (no matter the brand), eye protection - these are all things that need to be in place before you start the job. I wonder how many splinters I've kept out of my eyes and hands with just the goggles and gloves?

It's just one of those things you don't really think about until you see the need for it.

I was working on my buddy's engine that was strapped to a crate with sheetmetal straps at the flexplate and at the balancer. He wanted to take the flexplate off so we put in a metal bar in the balancer so it wouldn't spin. I got a socket on the flexplate and was loosening the bolts and was at the last one when the bar in the balancer slipped and 2 of my fingers (the ring finger and middle finger (most used finger smile.gif ) on my right hand) got caught in between the flexplate gears and the sheetmetal stap. The sheet metal cut through my fingers like butter (on the last digit) and the flexplate gear crushed up my fingers real nice. Them fingers were squirting like guysers. graemlins/clonk.gif Wasn't the brightest move.
All I can say is that superglue works wonders. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

i agree. My friend was putting on his exhaust when suddenly the pipe fell and cut his forehead. He was bleeding so much and blacked out for half a minute. We put a shirt and apply pressure. He got 6 stitches and have a harry potter scar now... Scary stuff when you see the amount of blood that comes out.

Funny you should say that! I was lashing my valves last week and slipped, inside of wrist was cut by the fender well, bled everywhere. 5 stiches later and I was all set, but at the track the next night I ripped two of them through cause I was shifting too hard!

My friend ended up being allright. I saw him the next day and his hand was a little swollen and sore. From the other stories, its not to uncommon to have these problems. It good to live and learn.
